Video Spotlight: Google Scholar Search
All Libraries Posted: November 8th, 2024Google Scholar is a free web search engine that indexes the full text of academic articles across an array of disciplines. This video demonstrates searching on Google Scholar and explains how to use the resulting links.
- You can access Google Scholar at https://scholar.google.com/
- Use traditional database skills
- Combine keywords with AND, search for related concepts with OR
- Put exact phrases in quotation marks
- Use search limiters and the Advanced Search to narrow results
- You can create a search alert yo receive an email notification when a new source that matches your search is added to the engine
- Save a Citation – Saves the selected citation in a new or existing folder
- Requires an account; access saved folders in My Library
- Cite – Provides citations in common style formats (MLA, APA, etc.)
- These are not always 100% accurate!
- Cited by – Provides sources that have referenced the selected article
- Helps to find relevant or similar articles
- If you’re having trouble locating the full text of a given article, click All Versions and review the files of the additional versions listed
