Video Spotlight: Recognizing Fact From Fiction
All Libraries Posted: February 27th, 2025In academic articles, the author’s opinions are often presented or portrayed as fact, making it difficult for readers to discern fact from interpretation. To recognize this difference, it is easiest to analyze an academic article by sections.
- Abstract – Brief summary of the article
- Introduction – Outlines the topic and current knowledge around it
- Interpretation of existing literature
- Methodology – Outlines how the study or research was conducted
- Fact, as it simply reports what was done
- Results/Data – Details the results of the steps taken in the methodology section
- Fact, as it relays data
- Conclusion
- Interpretation of the results provided in the data section
To avoid misconstruing opinion or interpretation as fact in your own research, follow the rule below:
- Avoid generalizations that overstate interpretations or conclusions
