Peer Review Week 2019
Scholarly Communications Posted: September 18th, 2019Welcome to the fifth annual Peer Review Week (PRW)! The theme for this year’s event is “Quality in Peer Review,” and will take place between September 16 – September 20, 2019. This global event was created to connect researchers in their quest to highlight and share the benefits peer review brings to scholarly communication.
What is Peer Review?
Peer review ensures high-quality work is maintained therefore allowing continual improvement in scholarly communication.
A peer-reviewed journal or article is one in which the content is subjected to an external review process to assist in determining whether it should be published. It functions to encourage a check and balance system within the academic community and to determine if an article falls within a journal’s scope. The UCF Libraries’ Peer Reviewed or Refereed Scholarly Journals LibGuide explains what peer review is and explores the best practices for identifying peer-reviewed scholarship.
The founders of Peer Review Week have stated the importance of highlighting this process on their official website:
- To emphasize the central role peer review plays in scholarly communication
- To showcase the work of editors and reviewers
- To share research and advance best practices
- To highlight the latest innovation and applications
In association with the team from PRW, The Scholarly Kitchen posted an article explaining the impact Peer Review Week has had over the last five years on scientific and scholarly quality as well explained what the team still to wishes accomplish, specifically in terms of diversity of journals.
