Hospitality Research:
Searching the Catalog

Introduction

This guide will help you use the online catalog to conduct research in hospitality, tourism, and related fields. For more assistance, please Ask a Rosen Librarian.

Accessing the Catalog

The UCF Library Catalog is usually a good place to begin your search for information, as it will help you locate books, journals, audiovisuals, and many other kinds of materials. You can also use it to manage your library record online.

Basic Search Screen

In the Basic Search screen, you can search using methods such as:

  • Keywords (Anywhere)
  • Authors
  • Titles
  • Subject Headings

Advanced Search Screen

Click on the advanced search tab to do more precise searching.




In the Advanced Keyword Search screen, you can:

  1.) Search for words (recommended)

  • Combine multiple terms using AND
  • Limit by:
    • Location (e.g., Rosen)
    • Format (e.g., Video)
    • Language (e.g., Spanish)
    • Date (e.g., 2000-2004)

  2.) Boolean search

  • Use OR, NOT between words
  • AND is assumed
  • Use parentheses for nested terms and quotations for phrases

  3.) Browse

  • Search lists of titles, call numbers, etc.

Understanding Search Results

The results of a catalog search will provide you with vital information for each item:


Partial results of a Keyword search


1. Title:

  • The title, author, and publication date of the work. Click on the blue hyperlink to learn more about the item.

2. Format:

  • In what format the library owns the item (Book, Media, Electronic Resource).

3. Location:

  • At which campus the item is located: Rosen, Main Library, CMC, etc.
    (For information about obtaining materials from other libraries, see the Rosen Research Guide on Interlibrary Loan.)
  • To which collection the item belongs (e.g., General, Reference, etc.)
  • The Call Number (where it will be found on the shelf.)

4. Availability:

  • Whether or not the item is available for check out.

Managing Your Account

Click on the renewals/library account button to access your library account.




After entering your library card number (located on your UCF ID card) and your password
(default is last four digits of your Social Security number), you will be logged in.


Click my account to:

  • View outstanding loans, hold requests, and fines
  • Renew your books (click on View Loans and then Renew All)
  • Change your password
