Introducing New State-of-the-Art Quiet Booths for Enhanced Library Experience

Quiet Booth. Single occupant booth for short quiet activities.

In response to the persistent demand for increased quiet spaces and a commitment to enhancing the academic environment, the University of Central Florida Libraries installed 15 cutting-edge Steelcase QT pods, or “Quiet Booths”, in the John C. Hitt Library during the week of November 13-17, 2023.

Acknowledging the common concerns of students regarding noise levels in the library, this initiative aims to address one of the most frequent complaints and requests received from library users. The installation of these booths aligns with the library’s ongoing efforts to provide conducive and comfortable spaces.

The decision to acquire the booths was made possible through the current fiscal year’s technology fee funds from students. These sound-insulated booths are strategically placed across all five floors of the library, providing students with a dedicated space for phone calls, short online meetings, or simply a quiet moment for focused thinking.

Among the 15 booths, five are designed for standing use, while the remaining ten have a small bench for sitting. The booths not only address the need for spaces to have private phone conversations but also contribute to minimizing disruptions in designated silent study areas.

Each Quiet Booth is equipped with user-friendly features, including easily accessible dual-powered USB-A and USB-C ports, automatic in-booth lights for subtle illumination, and a red occupancy light on the exterior to indicate when the booth is in use. Additionally, a dual-fan ventilation system ensures improved air circulation, creating a comfortable environment for library users.

While the booths are not entirely soundproof, they incorporate advanced technologies such as sound-blocking baffles, absorbent cassette walls, acoustic laminated glass, and a rigid doorframe. These features work together to maintain discreet conversations and offer users a heightened sense of privacy.

Commenting on the installation, Rachel Vacek, Associate Dean for Technology and Digital Strategies, expressed enthusiasm about the positive impact these quiet booths will have on the library’s atmosphere.

“We’re excited to introduce these state-of-the-art booths to the UCF Libraries. Not only do they address the immediate need for quiet and private spaces, but they also align with our commitment to creating a technologically advanced and user-friendly environment for our students,” said Vacek.

Library users with questions or seeking more information about the new Quiet Booths can contact Rachel Vacek directly, underscoring the library’s dedication to open communication and continuous improvement in meeting the needs of the university community. Special thanks go to UCF IT’s Joel Lavoie, Business Relationship Manager for the Libraries, for spearheading the idea of the booths, as well as for his efforts in ordering and coordinating their seamless installment. The UCF Libraries look forward to the positive impact these cutting-edge additions will have on the student experience.
