It has been 10 short years for UCF's Undergraduate Research Showcase, filled with remarkable student achievement.
At the 2013 Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence, held on Thursday, April 4, Kimberley Schneider and Michael Aldarondo-Jeffries honored the foundational and continuing support for Undergraduate Research given by University Vice President Rick Schell and UCF Librarian Richard Harrison.
Congratulations, Richard, on a job well done.
At UCF Founders Day, Wednesday, April 3, Andy Todd received the Excellence in Librarianship award for 2013.
Andy is a regional campus librarian, located at UCF Cocoa. He is known for writing and compiling Research Guides, such as Nursing Research , and for his work as an embedded librarian in scores of online classes. But he is also known for his dedication to helping students and faculty with library research. And Andy is known to all at the UCF Libraries as a wonderful colleague.

During April, 2013, current and former UCF Art Education Majors are presenting a broad range of two and three-dimensional works that they produced during their program of studies. Some works come from specific art education courses and some from art studio classes. Some actual works and images of the works completed in ARE 4453 and 5454 - Studio Experiences in Art Education held at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in 2012 are included. Many sculptural and ceramic pieces are going to be shown in display cases. A statement of origin that chronicles content and concept development and sources used accompanies each student work.
This exhibit is part of the College of Education celebration of UCF’s 50th Year Anniversary. We are pleased that the UCF Art Education Program that provides our service region with so many highly qualified art educators remains a vital and vibrant part of the College and University.
Three faculty members, Thomas Brewer, Bryndís Arnardóttir, and Anne Grey are showing a few works. Both student and faculty work may be available for purchase. Sales support the UCF Student Chapter of the
National Art Education Association, an SGA organization.

At 11.00 a.m., in Library room 223, Professor Gaudnek will host a discussion of this work.
And at 2.00 p.m., at the Art Wall, on the main floor, Professor Gaudnek will give a tour of the exhibit.
By the way, the subtitle of this exhibit is Roll over, Holbein. Holbein is a sixteenth century artist, just in case you forgot.
During March, take a look at this provocative, visually exciting display. It could only happen at UCF.
Enjoy yourself! There are certain Spring Break activities that kill brain cells. We know you will stay away from all that.
A great read might make your Break time even better. It's the perfect time to look at the Browsing Collection in the John C. Hitt Library. It's on the main (second) floor in the Infusion area. Lots of great books are in that collection, just waiting for you.
If a print book is not your preferred medium, how about an ebook? Take a look in the UCF Catalog and you might find that there are ebooks by your favorite authors.

Friday, February 1, many in the Libraries celebrated the tenth year of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement.
Despite a lot of progress, there is still a long way to go, because heart disease continues to be the No. 1 killer of women, taking more lives than all kinds of cancer combined. Go Red for Women encourages women to take charge of their heart health and gives them the tools they need to lead a healthy lifestyle.
A very good-looking group of John C. Hitt Library employees stopped a moment for a picture. We may bleed black and gold, but today many of us wore red.
The University is closed on Monday, January 21, to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. If you don't know much about Dr. King, you owe it to yourself to do a little reading.
If you are not in the library, you can still read an eBook. Search UCF's library catalog for two subjects: "Martin Luther King" and "Electronic books". Over 30 titles are available, including If It Takes All Summer: Martin Luther King, the KKK, and States' Rights in St. Augustine, 1964 and Becoming King.
The library is closed on 1/21 as well, but the resources available at the Libraries'site are available 'round the clock, every day.

If you are of a certain age, it might be hard to believe that former President Richard M. Nixon was born 100 years ago today, January 9.
And if you are of another certain age, you may say, "So what was he all about?"
Just go to One Search, on the library web site, type in your search, and start reading. Hundreds of articles, books, even DVD's can answer that question. The short answer: he was a complicated man. Take a look and you will be able to impress your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, with your newfound knowledge on an important figure from an era that was not really so long ago. Watergate, the opening of China, the Vietnam War, the first televised presidential debate, even Spiro T. Agnew---all have an abiding influence on our present.
A helpful database, if you would like a shortcut: Biography in Context. We may not have Richard Nixon to kick around any more, but his legacy lives on in a number of ways.

Work on the servers on that day means that the print release stations in the building will not work.
Final exams end on Tuesday, December 11, so it is expected that demand for printing will be at a low point.
Print release stations should be back in buiness on Thursday, December 13. Most students will have left campus by then, but should be happy to know that library printing will be up and running when they return in 2013.

Thanksgiving Day falls a little earlier than usual this year: Thursday, 11/22.
On Wednesday, 11/21, the John C. Hitt Library will be open from 7.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
The John C. Hitt Library will be closed on Thursday, 11/22, Friday, 11/23, and Saturday, 11/24.
The Library will open at noon on Sunday, November 25.
The Library will be closed on Gameday, Saturday 11/24. Your Knights take on the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers at Bright House Stadium. Kickoff is at 8.00 p.m.

In observance of Veterans Day, the John C. Hitt Library will be closed on Sunday, November 11 and Monday, November 12.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are currently 21.5 million military veterans in the United States. Veterans Day is a good time to think about all veterans, and their service and sacrifices.

Artwork is exhibited on the Art Wall as well in five glass display cases and encompasses a variety of styles and mediums, including stain glass, photography, mixed media, acrylic, watercolor, oil, sculpture, graphic, digital, and “nature” art.
Becoming a tradition, this is the fourth year the Hidden Artists will exhibit artwork at the UCF Library. Many Hidden Artists have gone on to enter juried exhibitions and had their work displayed in other galleries.
The Hidden Artists exhibition will be on display at the UCF Library on August 1-31.

Please be advised Computer Services & Telecommunications (CS&T) and UCF Physical Plant need to power down portions of the University's Data Center located in the College of Sciences building (CSB) this Sunday May 20. This is necessary to perform emergency power work to replace electric power equipment. The outage will start at 6:00am and is expected to last for 12 hours. CSB server rooms need to be shut down during this period and as a result several core applications and network services will be temporarily unavailable or have limited functionality. Please note that the entire UCF campus will be affected by the temporary down time.
The following applications will not be available for use:
* The net.ucf.edu Active Directory domain
* All hosted servers and VM services supported by CS&T
*All Library Servers. Ezproxy, Network Printing and possible internet outages for public machines.
* Enterprise PeopleSoft systems including myUCF
* Netbackup Services
* Webcourses
* View Star
* UCF.edu
* Unified messaging for CS&T Exchange users
The following e-mail services will be down and unable to process incoming and outgoing mail during the outage:
* Exchange
* PureMessage for Edge protection
Some e-mail systems may store any incoming mail during the outage for redelivery, but CS&T strongly advises that you check that any critical/expected e-mails have been resent to your Inbox after all systems have resumed normal operation. In addition, SMTP services including the new Microsoft SMTP service (ucfstmp2.mail.ucf.edu) will also be down during the outage. These include e-mail relaying and processing of outgoing mail. Knights E-mail will not be affected by the outage, but users will not be able to create new accounts temporarily.
The following systems are expected to be available during the maintenance period:
* 911
* Core network
* DNS
* Internet access
* IP Phones
* Systems supporting life safety
* UCF 1 Domain controller for DNS
* VOIP phone service
* Wireless
Computer systems outside of limited network services systems will be down during the maintenance period. For status updates during the power outage, please contact the UCF Service Desk at 407-823-5117. Our Service Desk will be taking calls during this maintenance period.
Celebrating 15 Years
On April 28, 1997, Barry B. Baker became the Director of Libraries at the University of Central Florida Libraries. In the 15 years following, the Libraries has seen a multitude of changes. For example, in 1997, we had 81 full-time employees (28 of those employees are still here!); in 2012, there are 97 employees and FY 96/97 budget was $7,249,420; FY 10/11 budget was $13,461,091. Total volumes held in the Libraries went from 845,459 to over 2 million.
Student enrollment has grown from 28,302 to 58,968! Consequently library operations have grown so much three associate directors have been added (for a total of four). Services have expanded, departments have been added, including Information Literacy & Outreach and the Universal Orlando Foundation Library at the College of Hospitality Management, and Special Collections "officially" became the university archives.
Through it all Barry has been steering the way. Congratulations, Barry.

UCF Dining Sustainability is sponsoring the UCF Library exhibit honoring April’s Earth Month. This exhibit, designed to develop an art experience that reflects our food system, is on the Art Wall inside the John C. Hitt Library on the Main Campus until Monday, April 30, 2012.
Range, Furrow, and Grove: Images of Florida Agriculture, is a collaborative effort between the University of Florida (UF) Office of Sustainability, the UF College of Fine Arts School of Art & Art History, the UF/IFAS Center for Public Issues Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (PIE Center), Florida photographer Carlton Ward, Jr., and University of Montevallo faculty member and exhibit curator Dr. Kelly Wacker.
“In this exhibition, we blend historical photographs with contemporary images of Florida ranching and agriculture to reveal past and present methods and approaches of representing the management of Florida's natural environment,” UF School of Art & Art History professor Katerie Gladdys said. Gladdys facilitated the artistic direction for the exhibit.
The exhibit's installation creates a horizon line reflecting the notion of land in general and the relatively flat Florida landscape in particular, contains color photos shot by photographer Carlton Ward, Jr. and black and white photos from the Agriculture Experiment Station Collection housed at the Florida State Archives.
“We are very excited and incredibly honored to have Range, Furrow, and Grove on loan, and to be exhibited as part of Earth Month in the UCF Library. We hope it inspires viewers to research the history of Florida agriculture, and learn more about sustainable food systems,” said Eden Wetherell, Sustainability Coordinator, for UCF Dining Services.

The Hitts kept coming -- Library exhibit chronicles 20 years of progress under president
The UCF Library celebrates the 20th anniversary of Dr. John C. Hitt as president with a special exhibit that runs through March.
The exhibit, John C. Hitt: Twenty Years of Leadership, offers pictures, postcards, awards, placards, signed sporting goods, and other memorabilia that highlight the two-decade tenure of the president and UCF First Lady Martha Hitt.
The display, assembled by UCF’s Office of Constituent Relations, chronicles notable milestones since the Hitts arrived at UCF on March 1, 1992. Those landmarks include the openings of major campus facilities, such as the Student Union and Bright House Stadium; the founding of the UCF College of Medicine and the medical city at Lake Nona; and various achievements by UCF athletic teams.
The glass-enclosed display is on the second floor of the library near the second help desk and the elevators. It is viewable during normal library business hours on weekdays and weekends through March 31.
The Hitts’ service at the university coincides with the rise of UCF as one of America’s great success stories in higher education.
In 1992, when the Hitts began at UCF, the university ranked 115th nationally in enrollment and fifth among state universities. Today, UCF is America’s second-largest university and the largest in Florida. More importantly, UCF has made major gains in the quality of its students, faculty members and programs, gaining national distinction on many fronts as a major metropolitan research university. UCF has also become a vital force in creating jobs and enhancing the quality of life throughout Central Florida.
President Hitt, UCF’s fourth president, is currently the longest-serving leader among Florida’s 11 state universities. He recently signed a five-year contract extension.

The Hitts kept coming -- Library exhibit chronicles 20 years of progress under president
The UCF Library celebrates the 20th anniversary of Dr. John C. Hitt as president with a special exhibit that runs through March.
The exhibit, John C. Hitt: Twenty Years of Leadership, offers pictures, postcards, awards, placards, signed sporting goods, and other memorabilia that highlight the two-decade tenure of the president and UCF First Lady Martha Hitt.
The display, assembled by UCF’s Office of Constituent Relations, chronicles notable milestones since the Hitts arrived at UCF on March 1, 1992. Those landmarks include the openings of major campus facilities, such as the Student Union and Bright House Stadium; the founding of the UCF College of Medicine and the medical city at Lake Nona; and various achievements by UCF athletic teams.
The glass-enclosed display is on the second floor of the library near the second help desk and the elevators. It is viewable during normal library business hours on weekdays and weekends through March 31.
The Hitts’ service at the university coincides with the rise of UCF as one of America’s great success stories in higher education.
In 1992, when the Hitts began at UCF, the university ranked 115th nationally in enrollment and fifth among state universities. Today, UCF is America’s second-largest university and the largest in Florida. More importantly, UCF has made major gains in the quality of its students, faculty members and programs, gaining national distinction on many fronts as a major metropolitan research university. UCF has also become a vital force in creating jobs and enhancing the quality of life throughout Central Florida.
President Hitt, UCF’s fourth president, is currently the longest-serving leader among Florida’s 11 state universities. He recently signed a five-year contract extension.
