Pride & Passion at UCF

Posted on: Mar 3, 2010 @ 6:55:59 pm

UCF's main campus library will be hosting a major series of programs and exhibits exploring the African American baseball experience and related themes:

"Pride & Passion: The African American Baseball Experience"
March 5 - April 15, 2010
At the main UCF Library, Orlando Campus

The UCF Libraries was selected as one of 50 nationwide sites for this exhibition, which was organized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the American Library Association and funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Baseball fans and history buffs of all kinds will find something to enjoy in the UCF Libraries' six-week series of exhibits and festivities:

• Come see the "Pride & Passion" traveling exhibition, which explores the story of African American baseball from the 1860s to the present day. Other exhibits will also be on hand, featuring baseball artifacts from local collectors, baseball paintings, and more.

• Soak up wisdom and life experience from four Negro League Legends, who played the game in the rough-and-tumble era before Jackie Robinson broke the color line, at a special program on March 19th.

• Hear interesting presentations by renowned scholars, such as Dr. Leslie Heaphy, author of The Negro Leagues, 1869-1960 (March 16th); Dr. Lee Lowenfish, author of Branch Rickey: Baseball's Ferocious Gentleman (March 22nd); UCF's Dr. Richard Lapchick, Director of the Devos Sport Business Management Program and Director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports (March 30th); and more.

• Attend a reading and book signing on March 18th by award-winning children's writer and illustrator Matt Tavares, author most recently of Henry Aaron's Dream.
