June Book of the Month

Posted on: Jun 2, 2008 @ 11:01:47 am

Looking for a quick, fun summer read that is out of the ordinary? Try Guy Delisle's witty and insightful Shenzhen: A Travelogue from China. If you've never read a graphic novel before, this book is an excellent introduction to the genre.
Combining illustrations, narrative, and conversation, Shenzhen tells of Delisle's stint as an animation studio director in a southern Chinese city. Delisle, a French Canadian, is also the author of the award-winning graphic novel Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea. In his works, Delisle uses clean, black-and-white drawings to evoke ideas and emotions that would be difficult to convey with mere words. In Shenzhen, his talented pen provides the reader with a perspective on China that is funny, touching, and nuanced.
Other good graphic novels in our collection include Gabrielle Bell's Lucky and Adrian Tomine's Shortcomings. For lighter fare, we also have comic books on subjects such as Indiana Jones, the Simpsons, and Star Wars!
Shenzhen, as well as other graphic novels and comic books, can be found in the Rosen Library Browsing Collection. Click into the Library Catalog to check availability or to place a hold. If you have any questions, please Ask a Rosen Librarian.
