April Book of the Month

Posted on: Mar 26, 2008 @ 11:33:54 am

Managers and future managers are crazy about Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking.
The book explores what is more commonly known as intuition, but author Malcolm Gladwell prefers the term "rapid cognition" because he believes intuition refers to the emotional component of decision making which can be tainted by prejudice or socialization. The trick, he says, it to be aware of the difference. Gladwell disguises the typically boring scientific studies as interesting stories with quirky examples to prove his central thesis: that "rapid cognition" usually works and it works better than slower, more deliberate forms of decision making (with some exceptions, of course).
If you like Blink, be sure to check out Gladwell's The Tipping Point, where he similarly summarizes scientific research as it impacts business marketing theory.
Blink can be found in the Rosen Library Browsing Collection, the Main Library Browsing Collection, or the Main Library General Collection. Click into the Library Catalog to check availability or to place a hold. If you have any questions, please Ask a Rosen Librarian.
