Renovation
Phase IID will renovate the 4th floor. Construction is expected to begin in May, 2024.
Successful architectural and construction bids were won by Steinberg Hart and Turner Construction Company respectively.
The design process is ongoing, but we can share preliminary principles and goals.
The principles underlying the design include: fostering student innovation and collaboration, a distinctive identity for the floor promoting arts and learning, and active design.
Goals for the project include: features to promote books and reading; 400 additional seats; 27 additional group study rooms seating 2 to 6 students; a student organization conference room; silent study space; and inclusive technology studios for student discovery and research, and for instructional use. Here are some preliminary renderings of the new space:
Renovation Preparation
In preparation for renovation, the Libraries will need to assess our collections which will result in relocating some physical materials and deaccessioning others.
In accordance with UCF Libraries’ mission, policies and procedures, materials actively being used for research, teaching, and learning will remain accessible at the UCF Libraries. Subject librarians are in touch regularly with faculty, and they keep us informed about the resources our community is requesting.
Books and print periodicals not meeting retention criteria will be removed from the library in compliance with UCF policy and state statutes, which say that books are state property and must be handled in accordance with state law. Federal and state government documents will be transferred to other libraries and/or removed according to federal and state regulations.
Please know that we are exploring all solutions in keeping with UCF Libraries’ mission, policies, and procedures as we maintain our commitment to be good stewards of state resources. This includes maintaining resources in-demand by our community and continuing our longstanding practice of utilizing the interlibrary loan service and materials recommendation program.
The Libraries will continue to support the UCF community with online resources, the preferred format for acquisition, and in other formats when unavailable online or otherwise essential.
Communication
A communication plan has been ongoing with campus leaders. Public forums will be held with the campus community. These have been announced on the Events at UCF page.
We encourage faculty and students with questions about materials they may need for future research or academic pursuits to contact their respective subject librarian.
