The Department of Biological Sciences was one of the original
departments of the university and was part of the College of Natural Sciences.
It taught biology, botany, microbiology and zoology. When the College of Arts
and Sciences was formed in 1981, the department became part of the new college.
By then it had added limnology to its curriculum. In 1991, the department was
renamed as the Department of Biology when a new department of Molecular Biology
and Microbiology was created in the College of Health and Public Affairs. The
College of Arts and Sciences split in 2006, and the Department of Biology
returned to the College of Science.
