Flip Book Set #1 (You and I), by Daniel Yovino, features a well made
box that contains two flip books. The box is made of balsa wood and Japanese book
cloth while the flip books are rapidograph ink and writing paper. The two flip books
are meant to be read two ways – once the reader flips through a book, it can be
turned around and upside down to give the reader another experience. The book “You”
reads, ‘You Rule’ and ‘You Suck’ while the other book, “I” reads, ‘I Rule’ and ‘I
Suck’. In his artist statement on the book, Yovino explains that it relates to his
paintings “which present words and pictures about subjective judgment.” Yovino goes
on to say, “These works speak of the will of an artist (whether ambitious or doubtful)
to become successful in an increasingly competitive world.”.
