Every person that you meet knows something you don't; learn from them.

News & Notes...

What’s New in the Library? Lots!

By now, most of you have met our new Public Services Librarian, Shane Roopnarine. He is available to assist you with a variety of Rosen Library matters, including library instruction, reference, web design, and collection development. He can be reached at 407-903-8003 or at Shane.Roopnarine@ucf.edu – or, of course, in person at the Rosen Library!

We are also in the midst of hiring a new Sr. Library Technical Assistant (to replace the vacancy created when Amanda Richards left). As soon as the hiring process is complete, we’ll be sure to bring the new person around for tours and introductions!

The UCF Libraries website will be undergoing a major update and facelift soon. Head Librarian Tim Bottorff has been leading the effort within the Libraries to create a brand new library website, based on current website principles and user-centered design models. The new site will also be easier to use and completely inclusive, incorporating information for all UCF Libraries (including Rosen!) throughout the site. Stay tuned, as the new site is expected to roll out later in the summer. In the meantime, of course our current website http://library.ucf.edu/rosen/ remains your go-to place for library research and assistance!

Speaking of new websites, later this year you’ll start hearing a lot about “STARS.” As UCF’s digital repository this will become a prominent collection of materials for, by, and about UCF. In Spring of 2015 the UCF Libraries received technology fee funding to start an institution-wide digital repository. It has been named STARS: Showcase of Text, Archives, Research, & Scholarship. By sharing intellectual and creative outputs in a central site in the cloud, STARS will allow faculty and students to showcase their work and make outputs available to expand and enhance research, teaching, and learning. Stay tuned for more information!

Library Instruction – Who Ya Gonna Call? Rosen Library!

If you are teaching a course in the summer that includes a research-assignment, we encourage you to think about including a library instruction component. Topics could include how to perform basic library and online research, how to find company information, how to cite sources, and more. Delivery options include:

  • Online modules through Canvas
  • Online modules through our library website
  • Face-to-face sessions

If you're not sure which delivery method to choose, we can help you pick the option that works best with your course and with your work style.

We request that you please contact us as soon as possible — before the start of classes, if possible — with all library instruction requests.

To schedule a library instruction component with one or more of your summer courses, simply contact Shane or Tim at rosenlib@ucf.edu, at 407-903-8100, or in person in the library.

Interested in Reusing a Canvas Research Module? – Let Us Know!

For those who have used our Canvas library research modules in the past: please do not reuse older modules, as some of the content and functionality will be undergoing a major change due to the library’s upcoming website change! Please contact Shane or Tim (rosenlib@ucf.edu or 407-903-8100) in order to receive an updated module.

University Writing Center Update

The University Writing Center (UWC) will not be offering consultations at the Rosen campus over the summer. However, they plan to be back in the fall.

Over the summer, writing center consultations will still be available at the main campus or online. Students can visit http://uwc.cah.ucf.edu or call the UWC at 407-823-2197 to set up an online or main campus appointment.

Accounting & Finance Tutoring

The accounting & finance lab in the library was very popular again this semester. Kudos to Dr. Kevin Murphy for organizing it, and thanks to all of the instructors who participated and made it successful!

The accounting & finance lab will not be offered in the summer, but we expect it to return in the fall!
