Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights: Tools for Entrepreneurial Success

Business names and brands, product logos, original artwork, secret recipes, and inventions are all forms of intellectual property that one can lose the rights to if measures aren’t taken to protect them! Come learn about patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyright, what they mean, and why they are important to entrepreneurs.

Need some holiday break reading?

UCF Libraries will be hosting a Take a Book, Leave a Book event on Monday, November 19 (the week of Thanksgiving break) from 11 am to 1 pm. The UCF community is welcome to browse the selection an take a book that they found interesting. If you would like to leave a book, you can do so but it is not required.

Early drop off locations for leaving a book are the Research & Information Desk of the John C. Hitt Library and UCF HR lobby (3280 Progress Drive in Research Park).

Join the UCF Libraries in celebrating Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead.  This is a traditional Mexican holiday when families and friends gather to honor and remember those that have died.  Typically on Day of the Dead, elaborate altars are created and offerings are made to aid loved ones on their spiritual journey.

Friday, November 2

Dia de los Muertos Craft Table – color calaveras (skulls), and make marigolds and papel picado, which are often used to decorate altars honoring the deceased

Documentary film screening with introduction and discussion by Anthropology professor Dr. Beatriz Reyes-Foster

Mexico from the BBC “Feasts” series:
Series in which food writer and presenter Stefan Gates immerses himself in some of the most extraordinary feasts and festivals on earth. By joining ordinary people in these strange and wonderful distillations of their culture and beliefs, he hopes to gain a revelatory insight into how the world thinks and feels. Stefan goes on a wild emotional and spiritual rollercoaster ride, starting with a teenage girl’s bizarre coming-of-age ceremony and ending with the Day of the Dead, a cacophonous cross-cultural festival of the senses during which Mexicans truly believe that their loved ones come back from the dead for three days every year to spend the day with them.

Are you interesting in becoming a better researcher?  Join us for Research Tips Tuesdays! Each workshop will be 40 minute online sessions with an additional 20 minutes for questions. Workshop topics will include skills that will help you spend less time on the research process and make it easier to find the information you need when you need it most.

• identify the relevant information you will need to use it as evidence

Notes on taking Notes – November 13, 2018, 1:00-2:00 p.m.
This session will explore:

• identifying what you should include in your notes
• Selecting the right note taking style for different situations
• Formal note taking methods
• Tools you can use to organize your notes

One of the fantastic things about UCF is the wide range of cultures and ethnicities of our students, staff, and faculty. We come from all over. We’re just as proud of where we are from as we are of where we are now and where we will be heading in future. Diversity Week, an Office of Diversity and Inclusion initiative, is the way we celebrate this.

Between October 15 – 19, UCF will celebrate our diverse community and provide opportunities to explore topics across the broad range of human identity, experience, and interaction. Diversity Week activities are intended to stimulate our campus and move us to a more inclusive culture. The theme for 2018 is A New Day Dawns.

As part of the UCF Libraries’ enthusiastic support of maintaining an inclusive space in the UCF community, we are offering many workshops and activities through the week. The workshops include a

• Zine Workshop
• a presentation on the DIVerse Families Bibliography
• two fiber art demonstrations
• henna art
• an open mic
• multiple days of film screenings
• how to start a family search.

The first of our additional activities is just inside the entrance to the library where students can add a sticky note saying what they hope tomorrow brings. The second activity is a map on the 3rd floor where faculty, staff, and students can place a pin in the area where they and their families have lived. The UCF community can also stop by the Curriculum Materials Center library in the Education Complex to view a display on the DIVerse Families Bibliography.
