Collecting Policy

The mission of the University of Central Florida Libraries Special Collections and University Archives is to provide services to the Library and University community in support of research, teaching and service. Special Collections acquires books that have a central function to the curriculum and that cannot be replaced and primary source materials that support long-term research goals. The University Archives is the official repository of all aspects of life at the University of Central Florida.

The UCF Special Collections and University Archives department has six distinct collecting areas:

1) University Archives – manuscript collections, university publications, records of university offices and organizations, audio/visual materials and other documents and ephemera relating to the history of the university are collected. On behalf of the university President and Board of Trustees, the University Archivist has the authority to review all university records to determine their enduring archival value. To ensure that historical university records are properly archived, university offices and employees are directed by the university President to cooperate with the University Archivist.

2) Floridiana – items in this collecting area include manuscript, ephemera and monographic items relating to the origins, development, and general history of the State of Florida, particularly the Central Florida region.

3) Travel and Tourism – materials including manuscript collections, monographs and accessible ephemera are collected to depict the history of the travel and tourism industry in the Central Florida region.

4) Book Arts – artist’s manuscript collections are collected as well as a wide variety of book arts showing the vast range and diversity in this artistic area.

5) Caribbean and West Indies – anchored by the William J. Bryant collection, this area collects mostly art and monographic materials though manuscript collections and ephemera are also acquired.

6) African Americana - anchored by the Carol Mundy Collection of African Americana, this collecting area consists of a wide variety of materials including books, art, sculpture, ephemera and photographs
