Using LexisNexis for Hospitality Law & Business Research

Introduction

This guide is designed to help you use the LexisNexis Academic database for hospitality law and business research. For more assistance, please contact us!

LexisNexis For Hospitality Law

  1. Go to the Library’s homepage
  2. Click on the Databases tab (located on top of the OneSearch search box)
  3. Choose Hospitality from the subject drop-down list
  4. Scroll down until you reach Legal Aspects/Law Cases and select LexisNexis Academic from the list

Note : If working off-campus, you may be asked to enter your PID and PID Password or Library ID Number (found on your UCF card) and Password to verify you are affiliated with UCF

Searching Federal and State Codes (including FL Statutes):

  1. Click on Search by Content Type (located above the search bar)
  2. Select Federal Statutes and Regulations for federal information or State Statutes and Regulations for state specific information
  3. Click on Advanced Options under the search box
  4. Check the applicable sources you would like to search. Ex.: For Florida Statutes, check the box next to Statutory Code and the box next to Florida
  5. Type keywords in the Search Box. Ex: hotel and negligence
  6. Click the Search button
  7. Use the Sort drop-down box at the top of the results list to display the codes by Relevance or Date order
  8. Click on the citation link for the statute you wish to view, ex: Fla. Stat. § 47.051 (2011)
  9. The full text of statute will be displayed, along with print, email, and save options

Searching Federal and State Cases

  1. Click on Look up a Legal Case
  2. You can search by Citation Number (ex:807 So. 2nd 55), Parties (ex: Bruno v. State), or Topic. Ex: golf course and easement
  3. Click the Search button
  4. Use the Sort drop-down box at the top of the results list to display the Cases by Relevance or Date order
  5. To narrow cases down by state, select the state's Supreme Court cases from the left sidebar
  6. Click on the citation link for the case you wish to view, ex: Palm Beach County v. Cove Club Invs.
  7. The full text of the case will be displayed, along with print, email, and save options

LexisNexis For Business Research

  1. Go to the Library’s homepage
  2. Click on the Databases tab above the OneSearch search box
  3. Choose Hospitality from the subject drop-down list
  4. Scroll down to Company/Industry Research and select LexisNexis Company Dossier

Note : If working off-campus, you may be asked to enter your PID and PID Password or Library ID Number (found on your UCF card) and Password to verify you are affiliated with UCF

Individual Company Information

Find a Company (the default search option) will allow you to find most public company information including: company profiles, current news, lists of competitors, corporate hierarchy, financial information, legal information, and intellectual property information.

  1. Search for a company by its name (being as specific as possible e.g., Darden Restaurants Inc. or Apple Computer Inc.), or its ticker symbol
  2. If your search provides many results, you may use the information provided such as company type (e.g., public, parent) and company headquarters, to make your selection

Company Lists

  1. Click on Create a Company List to create an exportable spreadsheet of all companies in a particular industry
  2. You may search by SIC or NAICS codes, location, zip code, size, sales, employees, and other variables
  3. When you have completed the Search Form click Create to view a list of companies that meet your criteria
  4. Click Next: Customize List to choose the attributes that you want included in your list such as revenue, company web address, number of employees, etc.
  5. Click on Update Company list
  6. To save your customized list as an Excel worksheet, click on Download Selected Items

Other Business Search Options

  1. Click on Compare Companies to view financial information of public companies for a side-by-side comparison
  2. You may enter up to 5 publically traded companies by name or ticker symbol for a report comparing balance sheets, income statements, and ratios
