Finding Books

Reference Sources
It is often a good idea to begin your research in the following types of sources, which are designed to be consulted for overviews or for authoritative information. In many cases, they contain vital information that cannot be found anywhere else. A denotes a core resource.

Biographies in the circulating collection are generally found in the following call number ranges:

  • HC102 - C272: Biographies, business leaders
  • TX649: Biographies, chefs
  • TX910.5: Biographies, hospitality leaders (hoteliers, restaurant managers, etc.)

Browsing Periodicals
The following periodicals are available in print in the library and may contain helpful information about industry leaders. General hospitality/tourism periodicals may also feature interviews and biographical articles about leaders in this field. To find articles on a specific topic, you may need to use one of our databases. A  Grad Cap  denotes a scholarly (peer-reviewed) source.

Databases
To find specific articles from journals and magazines, or to find information about a particular person, you may need to use one of UCF's many databases. (Note: if you are off campus, refer to the Off Campus Access page to find out how to access library databases using your UCF ID card.)

Some useful databases for biographical information include:

  • Biography Resource Center: Biographical information on more than a million people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas. Search by name, birth and death years and places, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender.
  • Biography Index: Biography Index cites biographical articles appearing in any of more than 3,000 periodicals indexed in other databases, plus select other titles.
  • Business Source Premier: contains full text from the world's top management and marketing journals, including Harvard Business Review.
  • Credo Reference: Includes the full text of over 250 reference sources, including encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotations. Users can choose to search all reference works or specific subjects, such as biography or business.
  • Hospitality & Tourism Complete: Includes scholarly research and industry news relating to all areas of hospitality and tourism, with coverage from the 1960s to the present.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic: LexisNexis Academic People searches over 260 biographical resources, magazines, newswires, press releases and trade publications.

Unless the person you are writing about is a celebrity, detailed biographical information on the Internet can be difficult to find. However, you may wish to explore the websites listed under General Reference on our Helpful Websites page.
