** The back half of the second (main) floor of the John C. Hitt Library will be closed, starting Friday evening, March 10, and reopening on Monday, March 20. Turner construction will be installing fire sprinklers in the area. You can request items from the Reference collection, located in the work area, to be retrieved for you. 5th Floor Study Space Closed

5th floor study space will be closed during spring semester for the construction of a new quiet study space. 5th floor library offices and Special Collections and University Archives will remain open, accessible by the south staircase and the bank of three elevators. 4th floor will remain in use as a quiet study floor.

The 4th floor bathroom on the Student Union side of the building is getting closer to completion, but remains closed as construction continues. The noise, dust, and inconvenience will make way for exciting, new spaces for student research, group work, and study.

Noise alert! North (Student Union) side of the John C. Hitt Library

You may have noticed heavy equipment and some digging behind the John C. Hitt Library. There will be noise in the library associated with the site preparation work, particularly on that side of the building.

The site is being prepared for some of the work on Phase 1 of the 21st Century Library project, which will include construction of an Automated Retrieval Center (ARC) on the north side of the current library building.

Pardon our dust! The transformation of the library is just beginning.

What’s behind the fence?

Have you noticed the fencing installed on the north (Student Union) side of the John C. Hitt Library building?

This is the start of Phase 1 of the 21st Century Library project. The site is being prepared for construction of the Automated Retrieval Center (ARC), a four-story structure designed to accommodate 1.25 million print volumes for quick retrieval in a three-story high space. In Phase 2 of the project, a student work space surrounded by windows will be created on the fourth floor, at the top of the ARC.

Before work begins on the ARC, power and plumbing lines will be installed. A new parking area will be completed in a fenced area in front of the College of Sciences, and the current parking spaces will be removed to make way for the ARC.
