5th Floor Quiet Zone Suspended

For approximately 2 weeks, quiet study on the 5th floor of the John C. Hitt Library will be suspended. Testing of furniture for the new 5th floor quiet zone will be taking place, so quiet on the floor will be disrupted by that activity. Today, Tuesday, January 19, furniture is being assembled and set in place. Details on your participation in the testing will be available here soon. 4th floor will remain dedicated to quiet study during this time.

Seismic Shift - No books on the 5th Floor

The Seismic Shift 2015 is Over!

Planning for the shift began over a year ago with a rotating roster of staff and faculty: Rich Gause, Frank Allen, Andrew Hackler, Ven Basco, Lindsey Ritzert, Andria Barratt, and Megan Humphries. While new members came in with transitions in staffing, bringing new perspectives, our goal was always the same: to find the most effective way to clear the 5th floor.

We ran studies of the collection to nail down the scope and procedures of the project. Our analysis was detailed enough to dynamically leave growth space through the collection, continuously keep track of the space we were gaining, and ensure we were meeting our goals. With a budget and timetable set, we hired students in stages to meet increasing workloads.

Shifting Books in the Library

Shifting Finished on 3rd Floor

The books on the 3rd floor have all been shifted.   Books with call numbers in the range of G-M are now located on the 3rd floor.  The shifting team is now working on the 4th floor.  Please be aware that there may be more noise than usual on this quiet floor.  Staff will work to keep noise to a minimum as shelving and books are moved.

5th floor quiet study

The UCF Libraries is excited to start work on our 21st Century Library project. Although we are breaking ground outside the building this winter, we are making big changes inside as well! As we shift books down from the 5th floor to the lower floors, the remaining space will be converted to a quiet study lounge with more outlets and computers. Look out for your chance to test furniture for this space, which should be completed by Spring 2016.

General Collection Shift in John C. Hitt Library

On Monday, June 29 the Stacks Unit in Circulation Services began a shifting project that will involve moving nearly one million volumes over the course of the next several months. The shifting project will make space for the newly improved quiet study space, and all books must be moved off of the 5th floor.

A team of student employees have been hired to work on this special project. The students must work with important attention to detail so all books are moved to the correct new location. The work can be hot, tiring, and dusty, and we really appreciate all the efforts of our student employees.

The first floor shift is complete and call numbers A to F now reside on the 1st floor. Shifting is currently taking place on the 3rd floor of the library. Please ask for assistance if you have trouble locating any materials.

The team has a lot of work ahead, but it will be worth the effort when UCF students have a newly designed quiet, comfortable study space in the library.
