The Encyclopedia of Military History from 3500 B.C. to the Present
by R. Ernest Dupuy & Trevor N. Dupuy
Ref D 25 .A2 .D8 1977
"consists of a series of chronologically and geographically organized narratives of
wars, warfare, and military affairs. The course of recorded history is arbitrarily divided
into twenty-one specific time periods, and one chapter is devoted to each period. Each
chapter is prefaced by an introductory essay presenting a professional assessment of
the principal military trends of the period, including its outstanding leaders, and
the general progression of the military art in tactics, strategy, weaponry, organization,
and the like. The chronological surveys of the principal wars of the period which follow
are treated separately from the regional or national presentations because they possess
a significance or geographical scope that extends beyond the confines of a single region.
The remainder of each chapter is divided into the major geographical regions known during
the era."

History Behind the Headlines: The Origins of Conflicts Worldwide
Each volume in the series covers thirty conflicts--including ethnic, religious, economic,
political, territorial, and environmental conflicts--and provides an essay exploring
the background to today's events. Includes a summary of the headline event, historical
background, and recent history and the future.
- "an ongoing series designed to present, in an informative and lively pro-con
format, different perspectives on major historical events drawn from all time periods
and from all parts of the globe."
- "Each entry begins with a brief statement of the opposing points of view on
the topic, followed by a short essay summarizing the issue and outlining the controversy.
At the heart of the entry...are the two or more lengthy essays...each presenting
one side of the dispute.... Entries also include excerpts from primary-source documents,
... detailed entry bibliographies, and photographs or illustrations appropriate
to the issue."
- "Individual volumes in the series concentrate on specific themes, eras, or subjects
intended to correspond to the way history is studied at the academic level", e.g.
the Cold War, the Middle East since 1945, World War II, the Spanish Civil War, World
War I, Revolutionary Russia, the American Revolution, and the Crusades.

Spanish Civil War in Literature, Film, & Art: An International Bibliography of Secondary
Literature
Ref DP 269.8 .I5 .M66 1994
"a bibliography of over 2800 novels, stories, essays and other printed material involving
the 'what ifs' of history. The genre has a variety of names, but it is best known as
alternate history. In an alternate history, one or more past events are changed and
the subsequent effects on history somehow described. This description may comprise the
entire plotline of a novel, or it may just provide a brief background to a short story.
Perhaps the most common themes in alternate history are 'What if the Nazis won World
War II?' and 'What if the Confederacy won the American Civil War?' " The Divergence

U.S. Military Intelligence Reports : Surveillance of Radicals in the United States,
1917-1941
Microfilm HN 90 .R3 .U5
"Along with extensive data on radical activities, these records contain a wealth of
detail on newly arrived immigrants (one of military intelligence’s favorite targets
in the early years covered by the collection). Furthermore, the documents provide valuable
inside information on the way in which antisubversive policies were planned and executed
at high levels of the federal government, by regional military commanders, and by local
authorities. The most copious records in the collection are those covering the Industrial
Workers of the World (IWW). Also well covered in the collection is the incipient American
Communist movement. Hardly neglected are various anarchist, socialist, social democratic,
and civil libertarian groups whose activities caused concern among military intelligence
officers."
