NTIS/GPO Pilot Project at UCF:

The University of Central Florida Library is participating in a Pilot Project with the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) and the Government Printing Office (GPO) to provide electronic access to selected technical reports available through NTIS.

These federally sponsored research reports are available via the NTIS document imaging system and consist of selected NTIS reports from October 1997 to the present.  The Pilot Project database of available documents has approximately 44,000 NTIS reports with several hundred new reports added each month.  For more information about the types of available documents, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions.

Through this project, researchers can identify, request, and expect electronic delivery within approximately 24 hours of the NTIS publications available through the database.   There will be no charge for receiving NTIS documents in electronic format through this program.  Currently, the initial searching and requesting of the NTIS documents needs to be done from within the UCF Library building.

How to Search and Retrieve Documents at UCF:

  • In the UCF Library, go to either the Reference Desk (entrance floor) or the Interlibrary Loan Office (entrance floor mezzanine, room 222).  A Reference Librarian or Interlibrary Loan staff member will need to log you onto the NTIS-GPO Depository Library Pilot Project Page, so you must conduct your actual search of the Pilot Project database from within the UCF Library building.
  • Search the NTIS Pilot Project database to identify and request reports. To request a report through this project, choose "Add this product to your download cart." Do not select the OrderNow button unless you want to personally order and pay for the document yourself directly through NTIS.
  • Once you request a report or reports (by adding the product to your download cart) and are ready to download the report(s), you will need to "Review your list" of requested report(s), "Proceed to download" the report(s), and then "Confirm" your download. This is a multi-step process. Follow the screen directions until you receive a confirmation number.
  • This confirmation number needs to be used to retrieve the documents later.  Library staff members will not have access to this confirmation number, so be sure to print this number or copy it down.
  • This confirmation number can be used outside of  the UCF Library.  Point your browser to  http://deplib.ntis.gov and select "Pickup your download request" on the left hand side of the screen.   It is not necessary to have a staff member log you onto the NTIS Pilot Project database to retrieve the publication(s) you have requested.
  • The publication(s) you requested will generally be available within 24 hours and will remain on the NTIS server for approximately 10 days. The "Download status page" or the "Pickup your download request" will give you the status of your publication (i.e., whether it is available for immediate downloading).
  • All of these NTIS reports are in Adobe Acrobat format and can be read on the computers in the UCF Library or any other computer that has Adobe Acrobat Reader software loaded onto it. The Adobe Acrobat Reader software can be downloaded at no cost.

NOTICE: This partnership is founded on an Interagency Agreement (IA) between the U.S. Government Printing Office and the National Technical Information Service.  The IA says that "neither GPO, NTIS, nor any depository library will impose restrictions on the use of NTIS electronic image files within the library or on a local institutional network" and "will allow users to view, print, copy, or transmit the image files."

Other Search Options:

If the document is not available electronically through the Pilot Project, it might still be available through the Interlibrary Loan process.  You may find one of the following databases useful in identifying pertinent information about the documents you seek.
