Are bloggers covered by freedom of the press?...is a college education worth it?

Well that's an interesting question for Library Newsbloggers such as ouselves.
The February 5, 2010 CQ Researcher has an interesting pro/con discussion about the protections extended (or not) to new media journalists, and the how the legal landscape is changing for journalism.
And while you're there, you might check out a discussion that is interesting for many of us at UCF, The Value of a College Education: Is a four-year degree the only path to a secure future?
CQ Researcher can also be found in the list of library databases at http://library.ucf.edu/Databases/

Are you ready for some football?

Or are you glad that Sunday, February 7, marks the end of football season? Or maybe you are a little sad.
On that day, right here in Infusion, on the plasma screen TV, you can see the Super Bowl. It's a football dream come true. You can tell your parents that you spent the evening in the UCF Main Library, and you can watch the Super Bowl and study and get a snack at Java City.
You might be a Marketing major who simply must watch the commercials. Or you might be a Colts or Saints fan who has a big test on Monday. Maybe you are upset that the Browns or Steelers or Dolphins are not in it and you feel the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat very deeply.
Whatever the case may be, if it is your goal to be in the library and watch the big game, come on over and watch the game in Infusion. Get your game face---and your study face---on.

Welcome back, Knights! A new year, a new decade, a new semester!

So...how are you going to kick things off now that it is finally 2010? There are those who start the new by looking at the old. You can read the Time Magazine article, "THE DECADE FROM HELL ... and how the next one can be better", Serwer, Andy, Kowitt, Beth, Time, 12/7/2009, Vol. 174, Issue 22, in Ebscohost's Academic Search Premier (just go to the letter "A" for Academic Search Premier in the list of Articles and Databases). Or you can take some positive action to make this semester the best one ever:

Set up a Refworks account. Go to the list of Articles and Databases, click on "R" and do yourself a big, big favor. Keeping track of what you read during your academic career, and being able to pull up citations to insert directly into your paper, or to compile a bibliography, is a wonderful thing.
Ask A Librarian. Yes, really. Chat, IM, call (407-823-2562 or 1-866-271-7589 **toll free**) or come on into the library for some valuable face-to-face interaction with a librarian. Got a really big paper or research project? Schedule a Research Consultation, your very own appointment with a librarian. You can bring your study group along if they are involved, or if you never travel alone.
Speaking of writing, were we?, the University Writing Center has resumed hours in the main library, 359. Schedule an appointment or just walk in.
Take a look at the LibGuides in your field! To have databases, journals, reference materials, etc., etc., etc., all grouped in one place makes life that much easier. Bookmark your favorites!
And finally---particularly if you are a new Knight, take a look at a guide to start the semester right.

Your UCF Libraries wishes all the best for you in 2010. Go Knights!

Work on the main library air handlers, December 15 - January 8

UCF Physical Plant has contracted for a major overhaul of HVAC air handlers to be done from Tuesday, December 15 through Friday, January 8. The dates were selected to coincide with semester break and cooler weather.
During this time the library will have less than half of the normal heating and cooling. Parts of the building will feel less air flow than normal, particularly in the 1984 addition (the half of the building on floors 1 - 4 closest to the Student Union and the back of the Washington Center.)
Thanks in advance for your patience while the university works to create a better environment.

Location changes for some print journals that are available online, to ease overcrowding

During November 2009, a project to relocate some of the Orlando campus library print collection will begin.
A message from Director of Libraries, Barry Baker:
With the rapid increase in student enrollment and the continued growth of the collections, the Orlando campus library does not have adequate space for seating for students and faculty and for its collections. While for the past six years several options including a new building and expansion and renovation of the existing facility have been considered, it is not likely that either will happen in the near future given the economic realities of our times.
In order to provide for more seating to accommodate a growing student enrollment and to provide more useful space for students and faculty, the Libraries will have to remove some of the older print collection which is also available online. Later this Fall approximately 48,000 volumes will be moved into remote storage off campus. These materials are primarily print journals and indexes that are available online in collections subscribed to by the UCF Libraries such as JSTOR, IEEE, Annual Reviews, American Physical Society, Institute of Physics and American Chemical Society.
The move to storage of these volumes will create additional seating as well as space for continued growth of the print collection. At least 150 badly needed seats will be gained and will be helpful in alleviating crowding.
If you have questions about this project or would like to have more information about the titles to be placed in storage, contact Michael Arthur, Head of Acquisitions & Collections Services, marthur@mail.ucf.edu .
