12TH ANNUAL BOOK ARTS COMPETITION

AWARD/PURCHASE:

The winner(s) will receive a $300 purchase award and their books will become part of the University of Central Florida Book Arts Collection housed in Special Collections & University Archives.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The UCF Libraries Special Collections & University Archives invites undergraduate and graduate Florida students to submit their artist books for the 12th Annual Book Arts Competition. All accepted entries will be included in the Book Arts exhibit featuring past winners at the John C. Hitt Library.

Jurors will select a winning artist book from the submissions. The winner will be awarded a monetary purchase prize and have their work included in the permanent Book Arts Collection. The winner will be announced at the end of February 2018. All submissions, winner or otherwise, will be showcased in an exhibit outside of the Special Collections & University Archives department during the month of February 2018.

JURORS:

The criteria for and names of the jurors are available to look at in the Special Collections & University Archives of the UCF Library, room 501 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

ELIGIBILITY:

All entries must be original work completed by any current undergraduate and graduate Florida student during the Spring 2017, Summer 2017, or Fall 2017 terms. Entrants are asked to submit artist books created in edition or one-of-a-kind. Books drawn, painted, printed with letterpress, printmaking, screenprint, and/or digital techniques will be considered. Construction of the book must be handmade. No limit of entries.

SUPPORTIVE DOCUMENTATION:

Submissions must include the following information:

  • The name of the applicant
  • Contact phone number and the mailing address of the applicant
  • Title of the book
  • Medium/materials used in creating the book
  • One paragraph artist’s statement

SUBMISSION PROCEDURES:

UCF Students are required to submit their work in person at Special Collections & University Archives on the 5th floor in the Main Library.

Non-UCF Students entries need to be sent through entrant’s student email account with .jpeg or .pdf images of books submitted to christopher.saclolo@ucf.edu

Each book must be accompanied by the official entry form, fully completed and signed by the entrant.

DEADLINE:

December 15, 2017

DELIVERY AND RETURN:

Non-UCF Student books accepted in the competition must be sent in a sturdy reusable box or envelope via UPS or FEDEX with return label and be received by January 26, 2018 (or post marked by January 19, 2018). No COD’s. Please send or deliver the actual books and entry forms to the following address:

Books not purchased for the collection must be picked up at the University Archives & Special Collections Department by the end of March 30, 2018 or they will be discarded. Books delivered by mail will be mailed back with included return label. Books may be hand delivered or picked up Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

COPYRIGHT POLICY:

While the winning artist will retain copyright, the book may be reproduced with approval of the staff of Department of Special Collections & University Archives. If reproduction is approved, the user must sign a form promising to give the artist and the University of Central Florida credit in publication.
