Al Turner was the
founder, president, and chief executive officer of the World Waterpark
Association (WWA) until his death in 2001. During his time as president of WWA
he kept slides, photographs, brochures, and documents about the various
waterparks that his company worked with worldwide. This collection contains the
materials that Al Turner collected.

Marilyn Turner donated these materials to the University of Central
Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 2007
Processing History
Placed slides and data cds in archival slide
sleeves. Placed photographs in archival paper. Removed metal paperclips with
plastic paperclips. Placed all materials in acid free folders, and all folders
in acid free boxes.
Access
The entire collection is open for research except for the mini dvd tapes
as there is no equipment available to play them.

Biographical/Historical Note
In 1974, after graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1967 with a
degree in journalism, Al Turner and his fraternity brother Dave Bruschi opened
a property and casualty insurance company in Missouri, which began selling
insurance for waterslides by the late 1970s. They found that insurance for
waterslides was overpriced but realized that if a group of waterparks bought
insurance together, the cost would fall. In 1980 they founded the American
Waterslide Association to reduce the price of insurance for members. In 1981,
Turner published a newsletter,
News Splash and held the association's first
convention. The organization developed rapidly, in 1983 it became the World
Waterpark Association. It is a non-profit organization that is now the world's
leading water leisure trade association representing 1300 parks and supplier
members from 52 countries.
Al Turner continued publishing the organization's magazines including
Resort Attractions,
Waterpark Developers Reference,
World and Waterpark Buyer's Guide.
News Splash was renamed
Splash in 1985. Al Turner died in 2001.
Collection Scope and Content
The collection is arranged in one series, alphabetical files. The
series is arranged in alphabetical order by subject.
Series I: Alphabetical Files, 1986-2002 contains pamphlets, brochures,
photographs, slides, and data cds that represent Al Turner's research on
waterparks worldwide. The collection also includes photographs and information
concerning places that Al Turner himself has visited. Conferences and expo
information are also a part of this collection. Some of the images were
published in Splash.
