The University
Marketing Office Collection holds materials that were created by the university
for marketing purposes. These materials are comprised of pamphlets, brochures,
calendars, informational handouts, event programs, news clippings, photographs
and book inserts. All of these materials provide information on a wide variety
of clubs, colleges, and organizations affiliated with the university.

The materials were first transferred to the University Archives by the
University Marketing Office in 2005, and accessions have been added regularly
since.
Processing History
Any deteriorating paper clips were removed and
replaced with plastic clips. Newspaper and magazine clippings were consolidated
into one folder. All materials were rehoused in acid-free folders and boxes.
Duplicates and post-it notes were removed. Some materials of interest but not
archival were moved to the vertical file. Photographs were sleeved.

The collection is open for research.

Historical Note
The University Marketing Office is one of five units that operates
under the University Relations department. A client-based service that operates
for both the administration and colleges on campus, the University Marketing
Office is responsible for the marketing of the university both to potential
students and to the general public. The University Marketing office strives to
consolidate all of the university marketing under its umbrella so that the
integrity of the university logo can be properly promoted and preserved.
Collection Scope and Content
The records are arranged in four series. Originally, the placement
of materials was determined by whether the advertising was on or off campus.
Upon the acquisition of new materials additional series were added for
newsclippings and the UCF Uncut Contest. Other marketing materials acquired in
subsequent acquisitions are added to Series I.
Series I: Campus Marketing, 1967-2006 holds materials that were
produced primarily about or for the university, its programs, departments, and
colleges at large. This series holds many different types of materials ranging
from small pamphlets to calendars and large booklets.
Series II: Off Campus Marketing, 1968-2005 holds materials that were
created for off-campus advertising and news reporting. Programs for music and
art events make up a large portion of this series as well as magazines and
newspaper clippings.
Series II: News Clippings, 1986-2009 consists of articles published by
various publications about the university, as well as its faculty, staff, and
students.
Series IV: UCF Uncut Contest, 2001 holds photographs and submission
forms from the contest, which sought to document a day at UCF.

Series I contains a variety of marketing materials that include
small pamphlets, stickers, postcards, glossy booklets, fact books, calendars,
and flyers. Some items of interest are postcards that were created by the
University Marketing Office for the campus that warns about the improper use of
the university seal, a final draft of a UCF Research report booklet that has
handwritten editorial marks, and small booklets made to mimic passports that
encourage students to take classes for a semester in another country. A
hardbound book can be found in this series that promotes the creation of an
arts complex in Central Florida. Marketing for UCF's newest college, the
College of Medicine, can also be found in this series. Other materials include
quick fact books that explain to news outlets how the university should be
referred to and identified.

campus publications. The largest grouping of materials for this series are arts
and entertainment event programs that advertise primarily for the Music,
Theater, and Art departments. News articles in this series were collected by
Joann Griggs, writer for the University
Marketing Department. A few of the articles focus on campus life and the 1973
visit from
President Richard Nixon while the majority
highlights the
FTU/UCF police force. Also of interest is a
brochure featuring two pages about the university in
Mike Thomas's book,
Orlando: Sunshine Sonata.

Series IV contains photographs and submission forms from the UCF
Uncut contest designed to chronicle a day at UCF. University Marketing
Department dispensed disposable cameras to UCF students, faculty and staff on
April 11, 2001 with instructions to take candid photographs of campus life and
to return the cameras the following day. The winning photographs, taken by
Mark Brannan,
Katie Damien and
John Gardner, were displayed in the bookstore
in January 2002 and used to create a website.
