The University of
Central Florida Athletics Collection documents the history and operation of FTU
and UCF sports and how University athletics have been chronicled in the media.
The creation of several FTU and UCF sports teams are highlighted here,
including the UCF football team in 1979. A large portion of this collection
contains publications from most FTU and UCF sporting teams including yearly
media guides used by local and national media outlets to aid in reporting on
University sports.

Acquisition Information
The University of Central Florida Athletics Department materials were
collected by the UCF University Archives over an extended number of years.
Donations were also made to the UCF University Archives by the UCF Athletics
Department in May 2006. The UCF University Archives will continue to add new
publications as they are published.
Processing History
All materials have been organized into acid-free
folders and stored in acid-free boxes. Rusted paper clips and staples have been
removed as well as all post-it notes. Scrapbooks have been cleared of any
foreign debris, re-secured, and wrapped in acid-free, heavy duty archival
paper.
Access
The entire collection is open for research.

Historical Note
Athletics have always been part of UCF culture as well as a source of
great pride. In 1969, the then Florida Technological University was approved by
the Florida State Board of Regents to have its first sports team - basketball -
with intercollegiate play starting in the 1969-1970 season. From early play at
area high school gyms to on campus state-of-the-art athletic facilities, sports
at UCF have grown enormously currently operating sixteen intercollegiate teams
as well as thirty University sports clubs. From 1994 to 2005, UCF not only made
forty-seven NCAA appearances but in those last five, ten UCF sports played in
their postseasons. With the opening of the new Wayne Densch Sports Center in
2005, new fieldhouse and practice fields, and the renovated UCF Arena and the
on-campus football stadium both opening in the Fall of 2007, athletics at UCF
continue to grow with each successful season.
Collection Scope and Content
The collection is divided into five series. The series are
determined by the subject matter the materials encompass.
Series I:
[Publications and
Advertising, 1970-2009](b01), is the largest of the series holding media
guides, game programs, flyers, brochures, and pamphlets created for the many
sports affiliated with the University. Some correspondence can be found in this
series as well as schedule cards for certain sports.
Series II:
[Scrapbooks, 1968-1972;
1977-1987](b02), were created by the Athletics Department to chronicle the
history of FTU and UCF sports teams in the media. Game programs and flyers can
be found throughout the scrapbooks. Some news clippings came from the
University student newspaper, The Future, while the majority was taken from
local newspapers.
Series III:
[Administrative,
1978-2000](b03), holds the files of administrators who worked in the Athletics
department during both the FTU and UCF years. The series currently contains the
files of William 'Bill' Goldsby and Art Zeleznik. Goldsby was the Business
Manager for the Athletics Department from 1978-1982. These files contain
correspondence, press releases, and notes. Art Zelenik has been the Associate
Athletic Director for Support Services since 1985. These files include
documentation of the UCF athletics department budget, insurance, contracts,
public relations, football files, and other miscellaneous materials.
Series IV:
[Press Releases,
1976-1988, 1990-1991; 1993-1994](b04), are sports news notes that were released
to the general media. Many athletic activities are highlighted here as well as
some club sports and various clinics that were held over the years.
Series V:
[News Clippings,
1970-2005](b05), are clippings from area and national newspapers and magazines
that report on the activities of various athletics teams for the University.

Series I: Publications and Advertising,
1970-2009.

The largest of the collection, this series is made up of
publications and papers that were produced by and for the FTU/
UCF athletics department. Materials include
media guides, programs, prospectus reports, handbooks, and advertising. Other
materials of interest include various tournament and championship game booklets
created for coaching staffs, pamphlets on various athletics clinics offered to
the general public, and campus oriented event programs such as the 1996
memorial for women's basketball coach Jerry Richardson. The media guides are of
greatest use to the researcher for they not only give that year's team roster
and statistics but in most cases, a history with teams and scores of years past
are provided. Correspondence in this series shows letters from team coaches and
athletic administrators to the general public.

This series contains scrapbooks that were created chronologically
by the athletics department as a way to save important information about
FTU/UCF athletics. Scores, statistics, team and individual player stories, as
well as general University sports news were saved. Since basketball was the
first intercollegiate sport for the University, it is the predominate sport
featured in the early scrapbooks. As more intercollegiate sports and sports
club were added, their articles were saved in the scrapbooks as well.

Series III: Administrative,

As this series grows, it will hold the papers and files of
athletic department administrators responsible for the operations of FTU and
UCF sports.
William 'Bill' Goldsby served as the Athletics Business Manager
from 1978 to 1982. During his tenure, Goldsby oversaw all of the financial
aspects of the athletics department, including the expenses involved in
starting up the UCF football team. Most financial matters that were discussed
are held in the Correspondence files by way of notes and memos. Goldsby also
kept a file on the wayward 'Circus World' project that was highly advertised in
the local media as a fund-raiser for the new UCF football team but was
cancelled at the last minute.
Art Zeleznik has been the Associate Athletic Dicrector for UCF
since 1985. Throughout his career he has assisted with facilities master
planning for athletics, as well as facilities design and construction
management. He is also the game day management director for UCF football game
operations. In addition, Art oversees several support services, including
strength and conditioning, equipment, sports medicine and video services as
well as serving as the administrator for the Golden Kinghts' spirit
program.

UCF and FTU sports press releases were sent out to local and
national media as a way of relaying scores, statistics, as well as team and
departmental events. The press releases featured in this series were collected
by the athletics department. Likely due to personnel and duty changes over the
years, the collection of sports press releases became inconsistent. Some years
are missing entirely while the organization of some years vary by date and by
sport. The first subseries arranges UCF and FTU press releases by date while
the second subseries arranges them by type of sport. The third subseries
contains press releases that were hard bound chronologically and are
shelved.
