These materials were created by the Office of the President 2 Boxes; 0 .5 linear feet Special Collections and University Archives, University of Central Florida Libraries. The seal of The University of Central Florida was one of the first items created for Florida Technological University. In 1966, a local citizen wrote a letter to the Florida Governor asking to take into consideration some thoughts he had as to what the new seal should look like. Within a few months, the staff at the newly formed Florida Technological University, with the help of the Board of Regents, began to collect information and designer input as to what the new seal should be. In a twenty-two month long process, the seal was finally chosen and unveiled to the public on April 5th, 1968. The final seal is made up of the Pegasus, designed to "bridge the gap between the humanities and space technology" and was chosen to keep with the university's goal of moving forward and making a "rendezvous with space and the stars". This collection highlights the initial correspondence between the community and the university and the task undertaken by the staff at FTU to create the new university seal. Acquisition Information

The materials were transferred to the University Archives in 1979.

Processing History

Rusted paper clips were removed and replaced with plastic clips. News clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper. All materials were rehoused in acid-free folders and boxes. At one point many items of artwork items in this collection were mounted with a liquid adhesive and thus, they still have a sticky residue. Acid free paper was used to back these items so as to lessen damage to the archival material and the folders housing them. Some materials of interest but not archival were removed to the vertical file.

Historical Note

From the beginning, the creation, final design, and current use of the University of Central Florida’s seal was a collaborative effort of both the university and the central Florida community. As Dr. Charles Millican oversaw the development of the new Florida Technological University in 1966, a Winter Park citizen named Major Forrest Shoup sent the then Florida Governor, Haydon Burns a letter explaining his thoughts on what the seal for the new University should look like. Subsequent correspondence followed and the Board of Regents Business Manager, Philip Goree, responded by sending letters to all of the public and private Florida universities asking for copies of their seals. Dr. Millican’s staff then assembled lists of seal icons and color combinations, attended university seal conferences, and consulted with various artists before compiling a final designers criteria list. The entire process took twenty-two months and on April 5th, 1968 the new FTU seal was unveiled to the public. There was no one designer for the seal, but many involved were acknowledged including two women who contributed significantly to the final design: the president's secretary, Ms. Mildred Kennedy and the secretary for the College of Business Administration, Mrs. Sonia Cirocco.

Collection Scope and Content

The collection is arranged into four series: Series I: Correspondence, 1966-1967, holds correspondence and sketches from various designers, citizens, Board of Regents officials, and Dr. Charles Millican. The correspondence in this series shows how the search for the seal began and the effort by the Board of Regents to gather information from all of the public and private Florida universities.

Series II: Seal Design, 1967, holds notes, suggestions, photographs, and logo examples. Many handwritten lists were created as well as typewritten seal queries for the FTU staff. There are also handwritten notes that were taken during an unnamed university seal conference.

Series III: Publicity, 1968, holds news releases, a photograph, and a graphics usage brochure. The collection holds several copies of the news release sent to inform the public of the new FTU seal design. A photograph and a copy of the newspaper article it was featured in is included in this collection, as well as a university publication that explains how to use the university seal in digital form.

Series IV: University Seal Preliminary Designs, undated (est. 1967-1968), is comprised of artwork created as design concepts for the new university seal. There are forty-two in this series and all are primarily made from a heavy paper or paper board while some use plastic sheets with logos painted on them to create the final piece.

Series I holds the correspondence between Dr. Charles Millican, various people affiliated with the Board of Regents, and citizens of Central Florida. Three seal designers correspondence are held in this series as well as some of their sketches submitted for the University staff's consideration. One designer, Norm Van Meter, was believed to have been Dr. Millican's brother-in-law, however, the documents held here do not show this connection. The letters from Major Forrest Shoup to the Governor and letters between the Board of Regents and Dr. Millican about Major Shoup’s suggestions are contained in this series.

Series II contains the many notes, seal suggestions, and examples of pre-existing logos that were used in creating the university seal. A collection of stickers, photographs, and paper logos from other companies and institutions is in this series as well as papers showing the involvement by the FTU staff in the seal’s design. Also of interest are some early cartoon renderings of the Pegasus and a rendering of a possible license plate design.

Series III contains the publicity for the finished seal design. The series features the press releases about the finished seal and a photograph of Dr. Charles Millican, Ms. Mildred Kennedy, and Mrs. Sonia Cirocco holding paper copies of the seal. Also of interest are copies of the seal given to students during Dr. Millican's inauguration as FTU's president as well as some copies bearing his original signature.

Series IV holds various seal designs and interpretations created during the seal search. This series hold forty-two designs, each differing in the logos and colors allowed in the criteria compiled by the FTU staff. There is no particular order for this series since it does vary in logo, design, and color however, the designs with Pegasus can be found in folders #31-#34. Oversized designs are housed in a separate box and are located in folders #35 - #42.
