Biographical/Historical Note

The Town and Gown Council was founded in 1982 by four women: Betty
Anne Stanton, Trish Duncan, Ann Hughes who served as the first president of the
Council, and Beryl Colbourn who was the First Lady of UCF at the time. Their
aim was not to raise funds, but to plan and host functions for both
entertainment and education in order to strengthen relationships between UCF
and the greater Orlando community. The Town and Gown Council aimed to act as a
liaison between the community and the university.

The Council holds quarterly luncheon meetings in addition to hosting
events to draw attention to academic, artistic, and athletic developments at
UCF. It works closely with the university's president, and in 1989 it
established a scholarship for non-traditional students at UCF. Each member of
the council works on a committee, such as, hospitality, publicity or
scholarship, and each committee has a chair. These chairs sit on the Council's
Board of Directors together with the members of the Executive Committee who are
the president, vice president, immediate past president, secretary, treasurer,
and university advisor.

This series includes all of the papers accumulated by the Town and
Gown Council since its founding in 1982. The folders are named for the
president at the time and the dates of her term. The folders from the early
years contain mostly correspondence regarding membership; letters inviting
people to join and letters declining membership. Almost all of the folders
contain the same things: membership directories, by-laws, meeting minutes,
treasurer's reports and financial information, papers relating to the Town and
Gown scholarship, invitations to and programs for Town and Gown events, and
papers related to the planning of those events. Some folders also includes
photographs of events, issues of Pegasus, the Alumni Association magazine,
newsclippings related to Town and Gown, memorabilia such as an Orlando Loves
UCF bumper sticker, brochures about UCF, membership applications, member
surveys and attendance, and pin and letterhead designs for the Council. Of
special interest are transcripts of interviews with all four of UCF's First
Ladies, done by Town and Gown for their event A Tribute to UCF's First Ladies
held in 2003.
