provide services that enhance the intellectual, cultural, environmental, and

		<head>Collection Scope and Content</head>
<p>The University Scrapbook Collection is an ongoing collection
containing materials created by and for the university that have been arranged
into a scrapbook format. The collection has been divided into four series:</p>
<p>Series I: University History Scrapbooks, 1963-2008, chronicles the
University's history through the local and national media. This series holds a
twenty-seven bound volume collection that contains materials written about or
for the University from its inception to the current day. This part of the
collection is catalogued under call number LD1772.F9 A6829. A small portion of
the collection includes programs for various campus events, inter-office
materials such as memos and staff directories, and photographs. The rest of the
collection is comprised of newsprint that was cut from local, state, and
national papers which talked about the University in various capacities.</p>
<p>Series II: Academic and Athletic Scrapbooks, 1968-1991, contains
scrapbooks from both academic and athletic departments and organizations found
on the FTU/UCF campus. These scrapbooks were created as a way to chronicle the
growth of the University's athletic and academic community through their
various events and performances. The majority of the materials include music
department programs for various events and performances as well as newspaper
clippings, advertising, and promotional materials for all organizations.</p>
<p> Series III: Student Organization Scrapbooks, 1969-1998, is a series
that highlights student events and activities that were planned and sponsored
by both the Village Center, the precursor to the current student activities
group and C.A.B. (College Activities Board), the current university group who
plans and sponsors student activities and events. The Village Center scrapbooks
are made up of thirty-seven folders and two scrapbooks while the C.A.B.
scrapbooks are comprised of eight scrapbooks containing pictures taken by
various members of C.A.B. both of their planning meetings and the activities
they promoted. This collection houses a multitude of news clippings that
primarily come from University publications as well as photography, calendars
of events, and pamphlets promoting various functions.</p>
<p>Series IV: Alumni Scrapbooks, 1961-1986, is made of mostly news
clippings that not only chronicle the emergence of FTU and UCF but the alumni
members who hail from the university. While this series does focus on the
growth of FTU/UCF, the history is recorded from an alumni standpoint. This
history shows a more student oriented view of the university rather than an
administrative view that is seen in the first series.</p>

<p>Series I materials entitled 'Scrapbooks' have been microfilmed and are
available for viewing through the University of Central Florida's Library Audio
Visual Department as well as in the library Special Collections Department. Two
copies can be found with the Audio Visual Department while Special Collections
has one copy. Reels are numbered starting with roll #14 and continue through to
roll #26, encompassing all twelve 'Scrapbook' volumes.</p>

<p>Series I is organized chronologically and holds news clippings
that were collected from a variety of outside sources about the University. The
remainder of this series holds a variety of promotional and in-house materials.
The collection also includes programs for campus events, office materials such
as memos and staff directories, and various photographs. Local newspapers that
are featured in this collection include the
				<corpname>Orlando Sentinel Metro</corpname>,
				<corpname>Cupboard News</corpname>,
				<corpname>Sanford Herald</corpname>,
				<corpname>Southside News</corpname>, and
				<corpname>The Sun Herald</corpname>. </p>
<p>Articles featured highlight many of the University's biggest
newsworthy moments in its history including the opening of the school and
				inauguration of Dr.
				<persname>Charles N. Millican</persname> as FTU's first president,
the building and opening of I-4, area colleges reaction to the Kent State
shootings in 1970 and the subsequent arrests, Dr.
<persname>Walter Gaudnek</persname> featuring his art at the 1972
				Olympics, the visit by President
<persname>Richard Nixon</persname> to the 1973 FTU graduation, the
official name change to the University of Central Florida, the continued
expansion of the campus, the formation of a new football team, as well as the
search and installations of the next three presidents; Dr.
				<persname>Trevor Colbourn</persname>, Dr.
				<persname>Steven Altman</persname>, and Dr.
				<persname>John Hitt</persname>. </p>
<p>Newspapers also frequently printed news briefs about students,
graduates, alumni, and faculty. Sports was a big news topic as papers featured
the basketball team, soccer team, volleyball team, football team, and other
sporting events. Guest speakers, movie nights, and other social and academic
functions were printed either as commentary about the events or articles to
promote attendance to the events. Microfilm was created from the volumes
labeled "Scrapbook" from 1968-1986 and is stored in several locations. The
archival copy is housed in Special Collections while two other copies are held
in the library. They are catalogued under call number LD1772.F9 A6829. These
scrapbooks were microfilmed as part of a larger microfilming project done in
the 1980s and run from roll number fourteen to twenty-six. UCF News Clippings
are similar and are shelved with the scrapbooks but have not been catalogued or
				microfilmed.</p>
<p>A few of the scrapbooks in this series do not contain news
articles but rather feature art and photography commemorating an event. The
scrapbook created by the 1979 Visual Arts Education students was a gift to Dr.
Trevor Colbourn that highlighted his Inauguration ceremony. Subsequently,
another scrapbook was created showing the Visual Arts Education students
presenting the gift to Dr. Colbourn.</p>
<p>UCF in the News holds copies of articles about the university
printed from web sites. The list of articles is regularly distributed by News
and Information to inform the university community about the institution's
				achievements.</p>

<p>Series III contains the scrapbooks of student centers and
organizations that reside on campus. The C.A.B. (College Activities Board)
scrapbooks are comprised of eight scrapbooks. A completely student-run
organization, C.A.B. operates from the revenue generated by the student

services, and activities for students. Events featured in the scrapbooks

<persname>James Earl Jones</persname>, the first and second annual
Dance Marathon for the Greater Orlando Children's Miracle Network (1997-1998),
				a talk given by
				<persname>Oliver Stone</persname> for his book A Child's Night
Dream, an Etiquette Dinner in 1998, Miss UCF, MasterCard Talent Show, and a
				speech given by
				<persname>Bob Dole</persname>.</p>
<p>The Village Center scrapbooks, arranged chronologically and
comprised of news clippings, chronicles how the center developed from being the
first on campus dorms to the social hub of student activities in the 1970s and
finally becoming Ferrell Commons in November 2005. Social activities and events
included high-profile guest speakers, local and national bands, performance
groups, art shows and exhibits, and movie nights. Homecoming activities were
also held here as well as housing the campus cafeteria. As the campus grew,
many of these social events were moved to more spacious areas but the core of
student activities remained active inside of the Village Center. Notable
				speakers during this period included
				<persname>Arthur C. Clark</persname>,
				<persname>Betty Friedan</persname>, Senator
				<persname>Walter F. Mondale</persname>,
				<persname>Leonard Nimoy</persname>,
				<persname>Gene Roddenberry</persname>,
				<persname>Hunter S. Thompson</persname>,
<persname>Ralph Nader</persname>. Performances by bands and
				performing groups include
<persname>Don McLean</persname>, Buffalo Bob and Howdy Doody,
				<persname>Arlo Gutherie</persname>, and
<persname>Harry Chapin</persname>. Notable movies shown during the
yearly movie series included The French Connection, The Way We Were, American
Graffiti, as well as a variety of X-Rated movies that would later cause

<p>Series IV holds scrapbooks made by various FTU and UCF alumni that
chronicle the birth and growth of the new university as well as the expansion
of the student population and university alumni members. The majority of the
information contained in these scrapbooks are from area and university
newspapers, however in many cases additional information was provided by the
creator of the scrapbook. Some original documentation on the creation of the
university can be found here as well as some original photographs. While these
scrapbooks do chronicle the history of the university, they are created from
the alumni point-of-view and contain information geared more toward the history
of the FTU/UCF alumni. Information about University events such as Homecoming,
the university name change, the search for the new mascot, and alumni
				gatherings can be found here.</p>
