Assistance Retrieving Books

Any current faculty, staff or student who has a UCF identification card and also has a disability that makes retrieving and photocopying materials difficult or impossible is eligible for service from this pilot program. For details, go to http://library.ucf.edu/ILL/Services4StudentsWDisab.asp

If a sensory or physical disability prevents you from retrieving materials, you may request assistance from the Circulation Desk. By appointment, a staff member will be assigned, and can usually be expected to retrieve about 20 items from shelves, or spend up to 30 minutes with a patron.

When possible, reference librarians may give individual service based on discussion of the particular needs of a research project and may retrieve some reference materials. However, they can not include in-depth assistance such as reading or interpreting of tables of contents to patrons.

Accessible Workstations

Computer workstations are available on each floor.

Audio/Visual and Telecommunication Aids

The UCF Library has several reading and listening aid devices.

To get the most benefit from this equipment, individuals must be trained. The training may be arranged by contacting UCF Student Disability Services, Student Resource Center, Room 132, (phone: 407-823-2371, TTY/TDD only 407-823-2116).

This equipment is useful for persons with print related impairments who wish to conduct independent research using the library's electronic resources.

Second Floor (Main Entrance Floor)

  • A personal computer with a 20 inch monitor for easier viewing is located in the Library near the Information and Research Center
  • A TTY/TDD communication device is located at the phone booth on the second floor near the bank of two elevators.
  • A large screen monitor with JAWS/ZoomText software is located near the Information and Research Center.
  • A self guided tour of the library with an accompanying printed exercise is available at the Information and Research Center.

Third Floor (Periodicals/AV)

  • A Chroma CCD color video magnifier can be used for reading print materials and as an aid in writing.
  • A Kurzweil Reading Edge can be used for reading print materials and as an aid in writing.
  • A Visualtex Magnifier is another print magnification machine.
  • Microfilm/Microfiche reader lenses with greater magnification (up to 50X) may be installed on the machines by requesting assistance. The greater magnification is useful for viewing large print on the screen, but does not print copies of the microfilm/microfiche in large print due to the limited size of the paper.

Personal Assistance

According to the Student Disability Services Handbook, "UCF is not responsible for providing personal assistants, individually prescribed devices or services of a personal nature." Therefore, you need to bring an assistant with you when doing your research.

UCF Computer Services

All campus computer labs provide a computer with JAWS and ZoomText software. To use this equipment, please ask the consultant on duty for assistance. Computer Services Instruction and Research Support, CC1 Room 104, (phone 407-823-2713) has a computer terminal with a large print and/or a voice synthesizer.
