Second Floor

Welcome to the UCF Libraries! The John C. Hitt Library is 5 stories tall, and you enter on the 2nd floor. This floor is home to the Circulation and Research & Information desks, the Infusion area with Java City coffee shop, and the brand new Knowledge Commons.

As you enter the library, the Circulation desk is on your left. This is where you check out books and Reserve materials, get a study room key, and pay fines. The Circulation desk is open whenever the library is, so there’s always a staff member available to help you.

To your right as you enter the building is the Infusion area. Infusion is home to a Java City, with coffee drinks, pastries, smoothies, salads, sandwiches, sushi, and sodas. The Infusion area is also where you’ll find the Browsing collection of pleasure-reading books, audio books on CD, and a TV playing news or other important events. Also in this area is the Copy Services office (with support for copiers and printers, and supplies such as stapler, paper cutter, etc.) and the library’s classrooms, 235A and 235C. If your class comes to the library for an orientation session with a librarian, you’ll most likely meet in one of these two rooms.

If you walk in the front door of the library and walk straight, past the Circulation desk, you’ll enter into the Knowledge Commons area. This was renovated during the Summer 2010 semester, and is now home to almost 200 computers and more than 450 seats. The area should facilitate individual as well as group study and research. We greatly increased the number of power outlets, so it’s a nice place to relax and recharge, use your laptop, or meet a friend. The Knowledge Commons is home to the Research and Information Desk, where you can speak with a librarian and get research assistance. The Writing Center has a consultation room near the Research and Information Desk, and you can also schedule a research consultation with a Research & Information Services librarian. The books on the shelves are the Reference Collection, important and often-used books that cannot leave the library building.
