Search:
Basic Search
Type simple keywords (separated by the AND, OR, or NOT
operator
Click on the <Start Search> button.
View a full citation by clicking on the <Go>
button to the left of the citation number.
Clear
the search query by clicking on <Go to Basic Search> link.
Expert Search
Type
in keywords (full citation), subjects, author, article title or journal
title in the spaces provided.

Subject
List:: enter a single word in the keyword box and view results before
limiting the search further
Author
Index: enter the surname (last name) of the author and view results before
narrowing the search.Use no
punctuation unless you enclose a name in quotation marks. Example:Williams,
John retrieves 278 items.However,
Williams, John retrieves nothing
because the comma is used with no quotes.
Article
title:enter a word or
several keywords from the article title
Journal
title:enter a word or
several words from the journal title.

Place
the retrieved subject terms in the blanks provided and use the pull-down
menu to limit the search to subject terms, if you so desire
Use
Boolean logic (AND, OR, NOT) by clicking in the gray pull-down menu to the
left of the search box to narrow the search.
Example: choral
music OR choirs and choruses OR choral singing (retrieves items containing any
of the terms; OR broadens the search)
Example: choirs and
choruses AND youth (retrieves items containing all of the search terms; AND
narrows the search)
Example:youth NOT children (retrieves items containing the first term, but
excludes items containing the second term.NOT eliminates a term from the search)
Connect
words with ADJ to search for adjacent terms in the order of the query.
Example:film ADJ review
Connect
words with NEAR to search nearby words.Include a number up to 3 for the pair of words.Example: concerto near3 piano
Use
wildcards when unsure of the spelling of a word.
?
replaces one character.Example:
Tchaikovsk? retrieves Tchaikovsky or Tchaikovski
$
replaces any number of characters.Example:: K$sevit$ retrives citations for Koussevitzky

also truncates a word.Example:
Sonat$ retrieves sonatas, sonatensatzform, andsonatina
Use quote marks to search an exact phrase.Example: boys voices
Use
parenthesis when you need to control the order in which the search is
completed. Example:(pianos

Set desired limits and press the <Start Search>
button.

<Go> button to the left of the citation number you wish to view.The full citation will display.Full
citations include the author(s), article title, journal name, volume, date,
page(s)/issue, language, special features, journal classification, and journal
country. Notes, when included, are a capsule description of the article's
content, serving as a mini-abstract. Publication information is given for books
cited.
Click
on <Previous List> to go back through the list, <Next
List> to move forward through the list, and <Back one screen>
from the results screen to return to the search strategy without clearing
the query. Click on <Basic>
or <Expert> to begin a new search.
Printing:
Follow
the instructions for printing from your browser to print selected citations.
