Happy 200th birthday, Charles Dickens! 2/7

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812. Not a math major? That was 200 years ago.
If you search the UCF Catalog, http://library.ucf.edu/, for Charles Dickens as an author, you'll find 446 items listed, 80 of which are available online.
If you take a look at Biography in Context, http://ic.galegroup.com/ic/bic1?userGroupName=orla57816&, which is on the library's list of articles and databases, you'll see that Dickens has had more written about him and his work than any other writer except Shakespeare.
And if you look in the online Oxford English Dictionary, you'll find that "the dickens" was in use as a phrase for astonishment or irritation long before Charles Dickens was born. It's worth mentioning if your parents ever called you "the little Dickens", ususally in reference to some mischief you perpetrated.
It would be nice to celebrate with a little reading. How about Hard Times, or Oliver Twist, or Great Expectations?
Dickens died in 1870, and is buried in Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey.

Easily export library catalog records to EndNote, End Note Web, and RefWorks

Do you ever forget or misplace information on what you have discovered or read? Did you ever need to put a bibliography together in a few clicks?
Now is a great time to improve your citation management by using citation management software. That's because the export icon---the little globe---that appears at the top of each record in the UCF Library Catalog now includes RefWorks, End Note, and EndNote Web. That makes it so easy to maintain a record of your research. Both EndNote and RefWorks have similar features. EndNote also has a version available online, EndNote Web.Citation management programs help researchers:
Collect citations from online sources, including library catalogs and electronic databases.
Organize references by subject, project, author, or other schemes
Create bibliographies formatted according to MLA, APA, or other widely used citation styles.
All UCF students and faculty may register online or download the programs, which can be found on the list of articles and databases.. You must have a recognized UCF IP to download the program.
A guide to using EndNote:http://guides.ucf.edu/citations-endnote?hs=a
A guide to using RefWorks: http://guides.ucf.edu/citations-refworks
So use that expanded export icon in UCF Library Catalog records.
Free music download: You're the One for Me

Alexander Street's featured download from Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is You're the One for Me, performed by David "Honeyboy" Edwards.
David "Honeyboy" Edwards embodies the continuity from blues' Mississippi Delta roots to electric Chicago blues. Honeyboy's string-snapping guitar riffs and soulful voice harken back to his friends and teachers Charley Patton, Big Joe Williams, Tommy Johnson, and Robert Johnson, who first forged the blues in Delta jooks and at country suppers during the Depression. Edwards crisscrossed the South in the company of such blues giants as Big Walter Horton, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Little Walter Jacobs. He settled in Chicago, where a post-WWII electric blues boom set the pattern for modern rock and roll. This recording captures him in a relaxed, unplugged, solo moment. Deep Delta blues from Robert Johnson's sidekick, whose searing vocals and stinging guitar bridge pre-war and post-war blues. Download it at http://alexanderstreet.com/GLMUdownload.htm
This track is owned by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and is available, free of charge, for a limited time only through Alexander Street.Learn more about Alexander Street's music listening, video, and reference collections at http://alexanderstreet.com/products/music.htm

Chemists, Sunday 10/23 is Mole Day!

What's a mole? Do you mean the animal, or the sauce, or a "beauty mark"? No: It's a unit (symbolized mol) used to measure the amount of material in a chemical sample.
The mole is defined so that 1 mole of any substance always contains the same number of molecules. This number is approximately 6.02 × 1023, and is known as the Avogadro number. The mole is a more convenient unit in which to measure the amount of a chemical than counting the number of molecules, and it has the same advantages. The physical scientist Amedeo Avogadro (1776–1856) was the first to use the concept of a molecule.
Where on earth did we find this?

The featured download from Classical Music Library is Johannes Brahms' Tragic Overture in D minor, Op.81, performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, John Carewe conducting.
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is a German composer and pianist whose music influenced many twentieth-century composers. He was born to a middle-class family in Hamburg and was composing by age 16. Brahms deeply appreciated and studied earlier composers, and in fact defended their relevance to a movement of composers led by Liszt. The Musicians of the Future, as they called themselves, thought that the future of music was in connecting it explicitly to an ideology or literary idea.
The Tragic Overture (1880) was written in conjunction with the Academic Festival Overture. Unlike much of the music at the time, the Tragic Overture has no specific story and instead is intended to express emotion. The piece reflects Beethoven's influence on the composer; like the Ninth Symphony, it is in D minor.
For more information, and to download this track, click here at http://alexanderstreet.com/CLMUdownload.htm
All tracks downloaded through this promotion are owned by Alexander Street Press and are available to legally download, free of cost to the user.

Digital signs! For information, and for your viewing enjoyment....

Have you noticed that a new era has begun in the main library? It's the era of digital signs.
Every floor of the main library has at least one digital sign. Aaron Keyser of the library's Systems and Technology department is shown here installing a digital sign on 5th floor, outside of the elevators (photo by Selma Jaskowski).
On the main floor (2nd), a sign with general information is placed to the right of the entrance. Digital signs with maps and computer availability have been mounted on pillars directly across from the Art Wall, for many months.
On 1st floor, 3rd floor, 4th floor and 5th floor, digital signs have been mounted outside of the "bank of three elevators": the elevators on the right as you proceed toward the main floor Knowledge Commons.
Take a look! Your comments and questions are always welcome.
And don't forget: you can see study room availability in a list, or visit the maps to see everything's availability, including PCs, in real-time!

New From UCF Authors

Schminke, Marshall and Maureen L. Ambrose. (2011) "Ethics and Integrity in the Publishing Process: Myths, Facts, and a Roadmap." Management and Organization Review doi:10.1111/j.1740-8784.2011.00248.xIntegrity provides the foundation for most scholarly endeavours, including research and publishing. Authors, reviewers, and editors share responsibility for creating and maintaining the system in which we conduct and publish our work. However, research and publishing are complicated processes. A single research effort may involve multiple authors, hundreds of participants, and a variety of skills and tools that play out over the course of months or even years. Ethical challenges may arise at any point along the way, so it is not surprising that both new and experienced scholars often struggle to understand and maintain the ethical standards expected of them. This article highlights some of the main challenges scholars face and provides initial guidance for seeking solutions. But most importantly, it sets the stage for this Special Editors' Forum on research and publishing ethics.
Follow UCF's authors via RSS!
