An exhibit on display through July 29 showcases remarkable work by Weavers of Orlando. The group is an active guild which promotes and encourages interest in the fiber arts. The guild has been meeting regularly since 1942. The guild members show their remarkable work on a couple of weaving challenges and swaps. The tree bark swap was originated by member Berna Lowenstein. The challenge was to replicate the bark of a tree from the book, Trees, in the designs of a scarf. The scarves were so successful Ms. Lowenstein sent pictures to the author, who purchased 4 of the scarves from their weavers.
The other woven items were made in a workshop conducted by the internationally known rug weaver, Jason Collingwood. Mr. Collingwood travelled from his home in England to teach the guild a class on rug weaving. He taught the technique invented by his father known as shaft switching. Shaft switching allows the loom to have more than the usual number of harnesses to create intricate patterns in the rug.
