To honor veterans, the University and the Libraries will be closed on Veterans Day, Thursday 11/11.
Databases, electronic journals, ebooks, and electronic government and reference resources are available that day---and every day---at http://library.ucf.edu/
The origin of Veterans Day: November 11, 1918, Armistice Day, the end of World War I. Credo Reference, which contains the Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World Dictionary, explains that the change to Veterans Day took place in 1951.
In Great Britain, the day was known as Poppy Day, when veterans distributed red poppies, which became a symbol for veterans in the poem In Flanders Field, written by a veteran, Canadian physician John McCrae. You can find the poem in LitFinder's Poem Finder. The "listen" feature lets you listen to or download audio of the poem. Find more on McCrae in Biography in Context.
All of these resources can be found on the library's Articles and Databases page.
Enjoy the holiday, and think of all those who have served America so well.
