More Study Tables, More Studyrooms, Longer Study Times

Comment: More tables to study at. More studyrooms. Longer studyroom use. Benefits are obvious.

From the library: You are correct: the benefits are obvious. The main library is working on providing more study and research space for individual UCF students, and collaborative research and work space for groups of UCF students, as well as maximizing the study rooms already available. This summer, work is progressing on the Knowledge Commons on the main (2nd) floor. Preparation for the Knowledge Commons included creating space by moving every volume in the main library, and placing some of the serial publications which are available online in an off-site storage unit (information on stored and relocated volumes at http://libguides.lib.ucf.edu/storage). Carpet, paint, comfortable new furniture, 100 electrical outlets, computer workstations will be configured to supply some new spaces for students. Partially funded by the Student Technology Fee, the Knowledge Commons is scheduled for completion in Fall 2010.

The library is currently placing tables displaced by the Knowledge Commons project in areas where only study carrels were located. There are a number of examples of this on 4th floor, the quiet floor. There will be more tables throughout the library than there were before, once the project is complete.

To maximize the use of existing study rooms, the borrowing period for the study room keys is 2 hours. In Fall 2009, the main library began using pagers to notify waiting students that a study room is available. The library also converted 5 faculty rooms to Graduate Study Rooms. These are located on the 3rd floor. Keys for the Graduate Study Rooms are checked out to graduate students at the 3rd floor Media Desk for a period of 4 hours.

This is not a perfect solution; but be assured that the library will continue to pursue ways to create new learning spaces, and to make best use of the existing ones for the greatest number of students. Thank you for writing!
