Access to Better Community Data (ABCD) The mission of this project is to provide easy Access to Better Community Data (ABCD) through a website on the University of Central Florida's Library web system, in partnership with the College of Health and Public Affairs Center for Community Partnerships. 1970-2030 Florida County Population Data (Florida Legislature EDR)
1979-2011 Florida Population Estimates (Florida Dept of Health) - Source: Population estimates are provided by the Florida Legislature's Office of Economic and Demographic Research (EDR). Population data shown on CHARTS and EDR's website may not agree, since EDR revises its population estimates twice a year and CHARTS population data are not revised as often.  Age-group data is provided by EDR in 5-year intervals (e.g. 0-4, 5-9, 10-14 etc.). Individual year of age populations are calculated by dividing the 5-year totals by 5.

American Community Survey

1999- American Community Survey (U.S. Census) is a nationwide annual survey which will replace the long form in future censuses. Only a small number of communities are included in the initial surveys.  Even the 2005 survey only includes county level data for most of the covered areas.  The Florida counties included for each year are listed below:

1850- Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) "consists of thirty-eight high-precision samples of the American population drawn from fifteen federal censuses and from the American Community Surveys of 2000-2004. The thirty-eight samples, which draw on every surviving census from 1850-2000, collectively comprise our richest source of quantitative information on long-term changes in the American population."

Bureau of the Census Catalog of Publications, 1790-1972.  [US DOCS C56.222/2-2:790-972] - This volume comprises two catalogs. The Catalog of United States Census Publications, 1790-1945 was published in 1950 and lists all materials issued by the Bureau of the Census and its predecessor organizations starting with the first census report of 1790.  Part 1 is also available in the Reference Collection [REF Z7554.U5.U62 1968].  Part 2, the Bureau of the Census Catalog of Publications, 1946-1972, updates the historical compilation and describes more than 60,000 reports issued by the Bureau since 1946.  See also Dubester's U.S. Census Bibliography with SuDocs Class Numbers and Indexes  by Kevin L. County & City Data Books
(Univ of Va) provides WWW access to the electronic versions of the 1944-1983, 1988, 1994  and 2000 editions of this U.S. document. County and City Extra is a very similar publication updated annually by a commercial publisher.  The most recent edition is available at the UCF Library Reference Desk.

Geographic Information System (GIS) & Map Resources

National Climatic Data Center - provides files for Monthly Climatic Data for the World, Storm Data, Local Climatological Data, Climatological Data, Hourly Precipitation Data, and Heating & Cooling Degree Day Data. Select the Free access by certain agencies and individuals link to obtain the full reports.

National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) is a project to create and freely disseminate a database incorporating all available aggregate census information for the United States between 1790 and 2000.

Orlando Public Library (Orange County Library System)

  • Business & Science Department (3rd floor) has various paper volumes of statistical data from the decennial censuses beginning with 1910.
  • Genealogy Department (4th floor) has all available decennial censuses (1790-1920) for all states, including the population schedules with names from individual households.   The population schedules for the Florida State Censuses of 1885, 1935, and 1945 are also available.

Post-1990 Population Estimates (Missouri State CDC) provides customized reports from the most recent county level population estimates from the Census Bureau.

Social Explorer (Queens College, SUNY) provides hundreds of interactive data maps of the United States, including historical data back to 1940.

Quick Health Data Online (Office on Women's Health, DHHS) "provides county-level data for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and US territories and possessions. Data are available by gender, race and ethnicity and, to the extent possible, age. Data in the system are organized into the following categories with many subcategories under each topic: Demographics, Codes and Status, Mortality, Access to Care, Infectious/Chronic Disease, Reproductive Health, Maternal Health, Mental Health, Violence and Abuse, Prevention"

STAT-USA (U.S. Dept of Commerce) - State of the Nation provides current and historical economic and financial releases and economic data. GLOBUS & NTDB provide current and historical trade-related releases, international market research, trade opportunities, country analysis, and the National Trade Data Bank (NTDB)

USDA Economics, Statistics, & Market Information System (Cornell Univ) contains nearly 300 reports and datasets from the economics agencies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These materials cover U.S. and international agriculture and related topics.

Other Statistical Sites on the World Wide Web (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) provides links to principal U.S. federal statistical agencies and international statistical agencies from over fifty countries.

ZIPWho provides free ZIP code demographics information based on the 2000 US Census.

  • American Demographics - The UCF Library has issues from February 1985+.
  • Demography is provided through JSTOR (1964-2001), which includes seven other journals dealing with population studies. UCF Library has all issues of the journal from 1964+.
  • Population Index (Princeton Univ) presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles, working papers, and other materials on population topics. This website provides a searchable and browsable database containing abstracts of demographic literature published in Population Index in the period 1986+. JSTOR provides full text, full image access to previous issues (1935-1985). The UCF Library has the print indexes at Index HB848.P83 for 1968+
  • Population Studies is provided through JSTOR (1947-2000). The UCF Library has almost all issues from 1947+.
