What is the Serial Set?
The Serial Set contains the Documents and Reports from Congress, but that brief description
fails to capture the richness of the content. Many publications from federal agencies on a wide
range of topics were published as Congressional documents. For example:
- Maya hieroglyphs
- war brides
- history of whaling
- dating the Dead Sea Scrolls
- plant diseases
- coelacanth fishes
- history of psychological examining
- consular reports, trade statistics, diplomatic correspondence
- annual reports of the Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts

American State Papers, comprising a total of thirty-eight physical volumes,
contain the legislative and executive documents of Congress during the period 1789 to
1838. The collection includes documents that cover the critical historical gap from
1789 to the printing of the first volume of the U.S. Serial Set in 1817. The books are

Maps
There were approximately 50,000 maps published in American State Papers and the
Serial Set in the years 1789-1969, such as:
- John C. Fremont's 1845 map that guided wagon trains through the West
- the first published maps of the Grand Canyon and the Everglades
- numerous Civil War and Spanish American War maps
- numerous coastal triangulation maps produced throughout the 19th and into the 20th century
- foreign maps of the Amur River in China, fortifications of the City of Paris, Antarctica,
and the water system of India

Committee Reports and Documents
House and Senate Reports from congressional committees provide the findings
of their hearings and deliberations, including recommendations to the House or Senate as a whole.
House and Senate Documents include:
- Presidential messages proposing new legislation or vetoing passed legislation
- Annual or special reports from executive agencies
- Some reports on congressional committee activities (usually published as
committee prints)
- Some congressional committee special studies (usually published as
committee prints)
