Following is a list of some of the newspapers available in the UCF Library. To identify current newspaper subscriptions, search the UCF library catalog. See also the separate listing of Florida Newspapers available. The list also includes links to some online sources, including several historic newspaper digitization projects. Online archives are identified for a few major papers providing free indexing but with a payment required for access to the full text -- NOTE: The UCF Library has microfilm of the full text for several of these newspapers.

Index to Early American Periodicals
covers all known periodical publications that had their inception and ending from 1741 to 1935. The full text of the actual periodicals are in the UCF Library in three microfilm collections (often referred to as APS I, APS II and APS III) and some of the full text is now available online in the database American Periodicals Series Online. The electronic index is incomplete but growing. You may find the CD-ROM version available in the Library's Electronic Reference Area easier to use. The print index provides limited subject access to the complete series and is shelved in the UCF Library's Reference Collection at REF AP2.A388. The newspapers available in the APS series are not listed above, but are identified in the UCF library catalog . Nearly one hundred of the periodicals in the APS II & APS III collections are at least partially indexed in Poole's Index to Periodical Literature [Index AI3.P7] (1802-1906). Poole's Index... was followed by International Index to Periodicals (1907-1965), Social Sciences & Humanities Index (1965-1974), Social Sciences Index (1974- ), and Humanities Index (1974- ). The last two indexes are available electronically as Wilson databases: Social Sciences Full Text (1983- ) and Humanities Full Text (1983- ).Dialog@CARL provides abstracts or selected full text articles from about 140 U.S. & international newspapers and wire services. Dates of coverage vary, with most beginning coverage in the last 20 years. The earliest full text coverage provides articles of the Boston Globe from 1980 forward. The file for "Gale Group National Newspaper Index" provides front-to-back indexing of the Christian Science Monitor, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post from 1979 forward. The earliest coverage provides abstracts of New York Times articles from 1969 forward. NOTE: The UCF subscription to this database was cancelled several years ago. Please ask at the UCF Reference Desk for assistance in selecting alternate sources. Access to these Dialog databases may still be available for a fee through the UCF Library's InfoSource service.
Ethnic NewsWatch is a full text database of the newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press with 550,000+ articles from 200 publications from 1990 forward, plus archival material to the mid 1980’s.FirstSearch provides abstracts and some full text for over 500 regional newspapers in the BusinessDateline database and abstracts for 32 national and regional newspapers in the Newspaper Abstracts database. Dates of coverage varies by title, with some coverage beginning in 1985.
LexisNexisAcademic provides abstracts or selected full text articles from many U.S. & international newspapers. Dates of coverage vary, with most beginning coverage in the last 20 years. The earliest coverage provides abstracts of New York Times articles from 1969 forward. Also includes transcripts from television and radio news broadcasts.
NewsLibrary
provides a searchable archive for over 700 newspapers. The earliest coverage identifies articles of the Washington Post from 1977 forward. Searching is free and the results include first paragraphs. African American History in The Press, 1851-1899 [REF E 185.2.A25 1996] provides positive & negative portrayals of African Americans in more than 1,200 articles & editorials and over 470 cartoons & engravings from thirteen major newspapers of the nineteenth century.
Keesing's Contemporary Archives/Record of World Events (1931- ) [REF D 410.K4] provides weekly summaries of world events, drawn from newspapers, wire services, and other information sources. The issues from 1983 forward are monthly summaries. Includes the texts of speeches and documents.
Facts on File (1941- ) [REF D 410.F3] provides "a detailed, objective and timely weekly distillation of the news and current information as reported in more than 70 major newspapers and newsmagazines from the U.S. and around the world."
Day By Day... is a series of decade-by-decade chronologies of world events from 1920-1999. The series is designed to provide students and other readers with a quick reference to specific events. See also: American Decades.
CBS News Index (1975-1986) [Index AP 2.C372] provides access to the transcripts of CBS news television broadcasts from 1975-1986. The UCF Library has a microfiche collection on the 3rd floor, which includes: CBS daily news broadcasts, CBS News Special Report, Special Report for Young People, CBS Reports, Face the Nation, Going Places, Inside CBS News, Magazine, Razzmatazz, 60 Minutes, 30 Minutes, On the Road with Charles Kuralt, Universe, Your Turn, CBS News Daily Broadcast, CBS News Special, Who's Who, West 57th, and Our Times with Bill Moyers.
Television News Archive (Vanderbilt Univ) provides abstracts of evening news broadcasts from August 5, 1968 forward. Includes title lists of some special news-related programming, with abstracts for special programs beginning in 1989. Paper copies of the index are available in the UCF Library for 1974-1979 [General Collection AI3.T44]. Also see LexisNexis Academic for full text of some transcripts from television and radio news broadcasts.
Newspapers in Microform [REF PN 4731.L54] identifies some of the newspapers that might be found in other libraries around the world. Entries in the first two volumes (United States) are arranged geographically by state and by city under the state. Entries in the third volume (Foreign Countries) are arranged geographically by country and by city under the country.
United States Newspaper Program is a cooperative national effort among the states and the federal government to locate, catalog, and preserve on microfilm newspapers published in the United States from the eighteenth century to the present. Most state websites provide comprehensive lists of their historic newspapers. See also the National Digital Newspaper Program.
