Reference and Documents Collections

Aerial Photography Florida is a collection of aerial photographs taken between 1930 and 2000.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Company Maps of Florida comprise a collection of more than 300 bibliographic units in more than 3,000 map sheets dating from 1860 through 1923. Digitized maps are in the public domain and illustrate the development of more than 130 Florida cities.  The UCF Library has the maps for Florida cities & towns from 1884 through the 1950s on microfilm (3rd floor) [MFLM G 3931 .G475 S3 1983].

CIS U.S. Serial Set (1789-1969) - This microfiche collection of historic documents includes over 50,000 maps, such as:

Draper Manuscripts - This collection of documents collected by Lyman Draper (1815-1891) deals chiefly with the history of the trans-Allegheny West. The full text of the documents are on 123 reels of microfilm [MFLM F 591.F7]. Appendix III on pages 419-459 of the guide [REF F 591.F7 Guide] identifies more than 575 cartographic pieces in the Draper Manuscripts. "Diverse in topics, areas covered, and the skill of the cartographers, these include numerous sketches delineating prehistoric Indian mounds in Ohio and the interior of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky..., maps depicting the early Virginia-Tennessee-Kentucky border region..., land survey plats, plats of the Tippecanoe battlefield in 1811 by two participants..., the Old Northwest in 1812..., and an 1821 map of the area which became Minneapolis, Minnesota...."

Florida Geographic Data Library (FGDL) - is a mechanism for distributing satellite imagery, aerial photographs and spatial (GIS) data throughout the state of Florida. The data is organized by county, or other regulatory boundaries, and is also distributed on CD-ROMs. Much of this data is now freely available from their website.

Central Florida Geographic Information Systems - The CFGIS initiative seeks to increase coordination among users of geographic information systems in Central Florida. Its two primary components are a regional users group and a data clearinghouse.

Orange County Government provides various online maps:  County Commission districts, existing land use, future land use, municipality jurisdiction, park & school locations, sheriff zones, traffic analysis zones, ZIP codes, and zoning.

Seminole County Government provides various online maps, as well as the following maps for downloading: Township/Range/Section/Parcel, FEMA Quadrangles, Soil Quadrangles, Contour Quadrangles.

wateratlas.org - "the gateway to a group of websites developed by the Florida Center for Community Design + Research at the University of South Florida in partnership with local, state and federal government agencies....goal is to design a comprehensive data resource, eventually covering the State of Florida, that helps citizens and scientists alike make informed decisions concerning our vital water resources."

St. Johns Water Management District provides various online maps about water, recreation, hunting areas, land acquisition, etc.

Exploring Florida Maps (Univ of South Florida) provides over 3,100 Florida maps from the 1500s through the present, including outline maps of each county with and without cities.

Florida Electronic Federal Depository Library (Univ of Florida) provides thematic maps for Florida by county showing population density and median income.

Florida County Selection Map (U.S. Census) provides links to QuickFacts tables with summary profiles showing frequently requested data items about each county.

Land Boundary Information System (LABINS) is produced by the Florida Dept of Environmental Protection and FSU's Florida Resources & Environmental Analysis Center (FREAC) to provide online survey information for the State of Florida.

Florida Geographic Information Board has established several customized digital libraries to support the specific needs of Florida's geographic information community, including the Florida Data Directory and the Florida Aerial Photography Library.

Orlando Public Library - has current and historic paper maps for the Orlando metropolitan area, including real estate maps with aerial photographs, FEMA Flood Insurance Maps, Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps (microfilm), Future Land Use Maps, Water Resource Maps, Wetland Maps, etc.  They also have some Nautical Maps for Florida, the eastern United States, the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands.   Trail Maps for canoeing, cycling and hiking are available for Florida and some other areas of the eastern United States.

Other Map & Data Sources:

Alabama Maps focuses primarily on Alabama, but also provides quite a few historical maps from other states.

American FactFinder (U.S. Census) lets you view geographic patterns for commonly requested statistics. For example, a quick thematic map could show the poverty rate for a Florida county by census tract.

American Memory Map Collections (Library of Congress) provides maps of cities & towns, conservation & environment, discovery & exploration, cultural landscapes, military battles & campaigns, railroad maps, etc.

TIGER (U.S. Census) - The Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system provides a public resource for geographic data.

David Rumsey Historical Map Collection focuses on 18th and 19th century North and South American cartographic materials. The collection includes atlases, globes, school geographies, maritime charts, and a variety of separate maps including pocket, wall, children's and manuscript maps.

Demographic Data Viewer lets you create maps and calculate statistics for 220 demographic variables from the 1990 U.S.Census. DDViewer 3.0 will map states, counties, and census tracts.

Digital Librarian: Maps & Geography provides a librarian's choice of the best of the Web, with brief annotations for some links.

Enviromapper and Window to My Environment (EPA) - These web-based mapping applications generate maps that display environmental information for the entire United States.

General Land Office Records (U.S. Bureau of Land Management) provides "access to Federal land conveyance records for the Public Land States. We also provide image access to more than two million Federal land title records for Eastern Public Land States, issued between 1820 and 1908. Images of Serial patents (land titles issued between 1908 and the mid-1960's) have been added to this web site. Images related to survey plats, dating back to 1810, are added to the site state-by-state as each state's documents are completed. "

MABLE/Geocorr2K: Geographic Correspondence Engine with Census 2000 Geography generates files and/or reports showing the relationships between a wide variety of geographic coverages for the United States. It can, for example, tell you with which county or counties each ZIP code in the state of California shares population. It can tell you, for each of those ZIP/county intersections, what the size of that intersection is (based on 1990 population or other user-specified variable) and what portion of the ZIP's total population is in that intersection.

National Atlas of the United States of America delivers easy to use, map-like views of America's natural and sociocultural landscapes.

National Geographic Map Machine provides thematic and historic maps of the world.

National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) is a project to create and freely disseminate a database incorporating all available aggregate census information for the United States between 1790 and 2000.

Odden's Bookmarks provide links for maps, atlases, sellers of cartographic material, map collections, carto- & geoservers, cartographic & geographic societies, departments of cartography, government cartography, and more.

Perry-Castaņeda Library Map Collection (Univ of Texas at Austin) provides approximately 2,400 political, physical, topographical, economic, relief, and historical maps in digital format.

Social Explorer (Queens College, SUNY) provides hundreds of interactive data maps of the United States, including historical data back to 1940.

Starting the Hunt: Guide to Mostly On-Line and Mostly Free U.S. Geospatial and Attribute Data

United Nations Cartographic Section provides more than 100 general maps of regions and countries, plus deployment maps of peacekeeping operations.

Wetlands Interactive Mapper Tool (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service) provides information on the characteristics, extent, and status of the Nation’s wetlands and deepwater habitats.

World Map Collections are a cooperative project of several public and private universities of Florida and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to make digitized modern and antique maps available on the Web. The Florida and Caribbean collections are particularly strong, but Africa, the Americas, and the Middle East are also represented.

World of Maps identifies digital maps and GIS on the Internet, links to catalogues of map holdings, map collections and map archives, map curatorship and map history, map institutions, map events and many others ....
