Installing and Running SciFinder Scholar

You must have the SciFinder Scholar client software before you can use the database. Students and faculty can download the client from the links below. Follow these instructions to install the SciFinder client.

You must use VPN if you plan to run SciFinder Scholar from off campus. Please see the SciFinder from Off Campus instructions below.

Tutorials and Guides about using SciFinder are available on the CAS web site.

SciFinder Scholar Installation Instructions

  1. Download and install SciFinder using the link below.
  2. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. You will be asked if you have a disk labeled Custom Site Files. Answer "No".
  3. Copy site.prf to the SFXCHLR folder on your computer.

Discovery Studio™ ViewerLite

Discovery Studio™ Viewers allow you to view 3D molecular models for structure results.

  1. Download and install ViewLite using the link below.
  2. After the ViewerLite, download and install the patch.
  3. Double-click on "ViewerLitePro5_patch-1.zip" and extract all the files to the ViewerLite folder, "C:\Program Files\Accelrys\ViewerLite50".
  4. When prompted whether to over-write files select "Yes".

Off Campus Access with VPN

To use SciFinder Scholar from off campus you will need to use UCF's Virtual Private Network. The UCF Network Operations Center provides basic instructions for VPN. To use VPN for Library resources, follow these modified instructions. Links below open in a new window.

  1. Create a VPN account for yourself as instructed on the VPN Help page. You will need to login with your PID and your myUCF password, fill out a form, and pick a VPN user name and password. Once you have done that, move on to step two.
  2. Configure your computer to use VPN. Several options are listed on the VPN Help page. The Library recommends either of these two:
  3. Create the "Connection Entry" with host address vpn3030.ucf.edu with name 'library' and password 'vpn3030'.
