Donor Profile: Art & Marcia Ketchersid

We are honored to recognize Art and Marcia Ketchersid in this month's Donor Profile.  The Ketchersid family is connected to UCF in several ways.  Art served as the first Head of Technical Services for the UCF Libraries, then called Florida Technological University (FTU).  His office was initially located in downtown Orlando before the main library was built.  During Art's years at FTU, the library collection was started and in conjunction with the Library of Congress, and the UCF computer center, the automation of the card catalog became a reality. Incidentally, the UCF Library was the very first building constructed when FTU began.

While attending FTU, Marcia worked in the FTU Library in the early systems department, participating in various library related technologies.  It was during this period that Art and Marcia first became acquainted.  Marcia graduated in 1974 with a B.S. in Computer Science, and then went to work at the UCF Computer Center.  Several years and several moves later, Art and Marcia met again, married, and had a daughter, Marla, who graduated from UCF in 2002 with a B.S. in Marketing.

In 2005, Art and Marcia presented the UCF Archives with several pieces of memorabilia from their days at FTU.  Their generous support of the Archives ensures the history of FTU/UCF is well preserved and maintained.  In June 2006, Art and Marcia participated in an oral history conducted by Liz Konzak, University Archivist.  The process of obtaining an oral history from those who were associated with FTU in the early days is a significant accomplishment and adds great value to the historical holdings of the Archives.

Thank you, Art and Marcia, for your support of the UCF Libraries!  To learn more about the UCF Archives, please visit them online at http://library.ucf.edu/SpecialCollections/Archives/.

Department Review:  The Curriculum Material Center (CMC)

So many who use the UCF Libraries are pleased to discover the Curriculum Material Center (CMC) in the Education Complex.  The CMC provides representative K-12 materials for preview, analysis, and circulation, primarily to the students and faculty of the College of Education.

The number of computers CMC has available has grown from 6 in 2000 to 39 as of March 2006, including 27 PCs, 10 circulating wireless laptops, and 2 Mac computers supplied by the College of Education.  Their other services have grown accordingly, as well.  They are now working in partnership with the College of Education and the Orange County Public Schools' Transition to Work program by providing work space for 6 to 8 physically and/or developmentally challenged students pursuing vocational training at UCF.  They also assist the educational community by giving area educators access to the Libraries, including the CMC, in support of their teaching and research needs (teachers, contact the CMC for more information regarding how you can use the UCF Libraries).

The CMC "cooks something up" with the UCF Creative School for Children.

The CMC offers many more services, too many to detail fully.  To learn more about the UCF Libraries' hidden diamond, visit their informational site at http://library.ucf.edu/CMC/default.asp

While the CMC's services have grown to the bursting point, the faculty and staff will continue to pursue any additional opportunities to support the educational community and UCF.

Looking Back Into the Archives

A Knight Showcase

On August 21, 2006 the University of Central Florida welcomed both returning and new students alike.  After the relative calm of summer classes, both the University as a whole and the UCF Libraries began another academic year guaranteed to be as good as those "A Knight Showcase" endeavors to celebrate.  And celebrate, we did!  On August 21, as well as being the first day of classes, was the day the University Archives and the UCF Special Collections unveiled to the UCF population this remarkable exhibit.  "Opening Knight" was an outstanding opportunity to connect with students, staff, faculty, and friends of the library with walkthroughs of the exhibit, the Special Collections Reading Room, and snacks.  "A Knight Showcase" shows deeply stored and little known artifacts from UCF's 43-year history.  It is a celebration, not just of where UCF has come from, but also points to where UCF may lead in the future.

This, however, was not the only chance to see this exhibit.  Indeed, it will remain in place for all who enter the library to see through the beginning of November, just after, appropriately enough, Spirit Splash.

It is appropriate that such a detailed display of the University Archives is shown at that time, as October is Archives Month.  To honor Archives Month, "A Knight Showcase" will be the center of a particularly grand evening, on October 12 from 4:30 pm to 7 pm.  Interested bibliophiles, archivists, faculty, and patrons are invited to attend the catered evening party which will highlight a number of brief speakers.  Should anyone like to attend or obtain more information, donate materials and/or RSVP, please contact 407-823-2576 or e-mail the Special Collections and University Archives.

Charles Millican Society Members to be
Recognized at Fall Event

Those individuals who demonstrate their ongoing support for the University of Central Florida and its students by making a planned gift commitment are honored for their deferred gift by becoming members of the Charles Millican Society.  Planned gifts include bequests, trust beneficiary designations, life insurance, charitable annuities, and other estate planning instruments.  New and existing members of the Society will be invited to attend a recognition reception this fall at the Burnett House, the home of UCF’s president.  The event will be held on October 25, 2006, at 6 pm, so if you are, or soon intend to become a Millican Society member, please save the date for this special bi-annual event.

If you have already included UCF in your estate plans, and may not have notified us about it, please contact Jeff Cohen, Assistant Director of Planned Giving, in the UCFoundation, at (407) 882-1266 or by e-mail.

We’d like to recognize you as a member of the Charles Millican Society and have you as a guest at our fall reception.
