The UCF Libraries are honored to announce that longtime UCF friend and advocate, Phoebe Carpenter, recently made a $100,000 pledge to the UCF Regional Library located at the BCC/UCF Joint-Use campus in Cocoa.  The gift will establish the John Archer Carpenter Library Enhancement Fund, which will provide funding toward the purchase of books, electronic resources/media, and scholarly research.  The books and resources will include the study of English, the Humanities, and Renaissance English Literature.  "I am giving this gift because of the good work being accomplished in the collaboration between UCF and Brevard Community College," said Phoebe.

Phoebe has served on several UCF boards, including the UCF Foundation Board of Trustees.  Her passion for learning and education was cultivated at an early age by her parents.   According to Phoebe, "When the idea of UCF was born, my father was chairman of the Florida Board of Regents.  Later, he went on to become the chairman of the National Association of Boards of Control and Boards of Regents.  He was a serious champion of the development of a university in Central Florida.  He and mother became more and more intense in their recognition of education as the most important factor in the success of a nation or a people."

Thank you, Phoebe, for your generous support of the UCF Libraries!  Your gift will greatly impact all UCF students who utilize the BCC/UCF Joint-Use Library.

National Library Week, April 2006

During the month of April the UCF Libraries will celebrate National Library Week, April 2-8.

An exhibit on the second floor of the main UCF Orlando Library will highlight this year’s event.  There will be three large display cabinets containing book and CD selections by faculty and staff from the various UCF libraries.  Each of this year’s participants were asked to select a book or CD which they gave either to a friend, spouse, or child and why.

We hope you will find time to visit the main library at the UCF Orlando Campus and see what type of books and CDs were selected for the National Library Week exhibit.

Virtual Heritage at UCF (June-July 2006)

Less than a generation ago, Cape Canaveral rivaled New York City as the world’s most recognizable skyline.  When a photo of the row of gantries appeared on the front page of a newspaper or on the evening news, there was no guessing as to the locale – everyone immediately knew it was Cape Canaveral.  Its skyline was unmistakable.   Bright orange gantries rose up from the beautiful Florida sands.  Each gantry tower stood as a sentinel awaiting the next launch to the heavens.

Today the skyline of Cape Canaveral is a shadow of its glory years.  The historic sites that John Glenn and Gordon Cooper once tread are little more than weed riddled concrete pads.  It is financially impossible to restore Cape Canaveral to its former glory through traditional historic preservation.  The application of computer simulated virtual reality can assist in recreating the past.

This exhibit encompasses physical Cape Canaveral artifacts, historical photographs, and the work of the UCF Digital Media student team working on Shadows of Canaveral.

So come and explore 1962 Cape Canaveral – virtually that is.  Visit Virtual Heritage at the University of Central Florida:   www.ucfvirtualheritage.org.

Hold the Date

The UCF Libraries will honor Norman and Jean Gould, and sons Jeffrey and Bruce, on May 17 for their generous support of the UCF Libraries.  More details will be shared soon.   Friends of the Library will be invited to join us as we officially dedicate The Gould Family Law Collection.

Kudos - Phyllis J. Hudson Granted Librarian Emerita Status

Photo of Phyllis Hudson, Librarian

Phyllis J. Hudson was awarded Librarian Emerita status at the annual Founders' Day Honors Convocation at the University of Central Florida on April 5, 2006. Emeritus status is a high honor conferred upon retired or retiring faculty who are full professor, university librarian, associate professor, or associate librarian rank.  Faculty must have made major professional contributions while at UCF, remained active after retirement, achieved eminence so that the title Emeritus will be an honor to the individual and the university, and been voted to receive the honor by their peers.  Phyllis' career spans over 30 years with the UCF Libraries.  During that time, she held positions in circulation, cataloging, online searching, and reference.  She played a strong role in the formative years of bibliographic instruction programs in the state and was one of the first chairs of the Florida Library Association's Caucus on Library Orientation and Bibliographic Instruction (LOBI) as well as numerous ALA, ACRL, and Southeastern Library Association activities.  Phyllis is perhaps best known for her important work in Florida's collective bargaining process in higher education with the United Faculty of Florida (UFF).  She has served UFF in many different capacities, from UCF Chapter President of UFF (1987-89) to the statewide UFF Chief Negotiator (1984-1986), finishing her union activities as a UCF Bargaining Team Member from 2003-2005.  She served on the Orange County Library System Board of Directors from 2000-2002.  Currently, she is working on the archives of the history of the UFF and other Florida archives.
