Honoring Good Friends

How would you like to be remembered?  In November 2006, faculty, staff, and friends gathered to celebrate the lives of two outstanding women through an awards ceremony for scholarships founded in their names.

The June S. Stillman Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 after the untimely death of Ms. Stillman, one of the first librarians hired for the budding new Florida Technological University (later renamed University of Central Florida).

The 2006 scholarship was presented to Liz Krieger,a student assistant in the Reference Services department, by Cheryl Mahan, long-time friend and co-founder (with Phyllis Hudson) of the June S. Stillman Memorial Scholarship.  The generosity of UCF faculty, staff, and friends, and subsequently many other contributors to the UCF Libraries, maintain this scholarship to honor June and keep the memory of her life and contributions to the profession alive.

In 1992, with the help of friend and advisor John P. Stilwell, Miss Lois Holt established the Lois Holt Foundation, whose goal was to provide scholarships and grants to enable students to reach their educational objectives. Through the friendship and support of both John Stilwell and Lois Holt, the Lois Holt Scholarship for Libraries Student Assistants was funded beginning in 1994. Miss Holt, who passed away in 1999, is remembered each year during the scholarship awards ceremony for her legacy of generosity and commitment to education. In 2006 the Libraries also lost John Stilwell from its family of friends. We were pleased to honor his memory with the assistance of Mr. Ed Hofma, administrator of the Lois Holt Foundation, and John's daughter and son-in-law, Annie & Jimmie Bush. Ryan Bauer, who works in the Circulation & Media Services department, received the 2006 Holt Scholarship.

The legacies of June Stillman, Lois Holt, and John Stilwell have enriched the educational and professional lives of all those they have touched, in particularly the students, through these important scholarships and we are all grateful.

The UCF Libraries demonstrates continuous efforts in ensuring that all students are aware of available resources to further their education.  Our most recent project proved the UCF Libraries' commitment towards our students.  From October to November 2006, a contest was arranged in which students were automatically enrolled in a drawing for an iPod when they participated in an online chat session with our Ask-A-Librarian staff members.  As a result, Ms. Diana Lam, a UCF student, not only acquired new found information useful for her studies, but she is also enjoying the great sounds from her new 2GB iPod Nano.  Congratulations Diana!
