A donation to support the purchase of library materials is a thoughtful and enduring way to commemorate an event or remember a special person.

The University of Central Florida Libraries is pleased to accept donations toward the purchase of new library materials. Library materials purchased as part of a donation receive a bookplate with the donor’s name and the name of the person and/or event being recognized or honored.

The library urges donors to allow the collection development librarians to make selections based on immediate need and relevancy, in consideration of many factors including space concerns and statewide cooperative collection development.  However, suggestions that purchases be made within specific subject areas are acceptable and the library is more than willing to provide donors with prospective titles lists prior to purchase.

Criteria for the purchase of materials from donated funds are the same as the collection development policy for the Libraries:

  • a focus on monographs and serial publications in online and print formats that support the education and research mission of the university.
  • selections at the undergraduate, graduate or professional content level.

Specific titles are considered if they fall within these criteria.

To make a donation, contact the Director of Libraries in writing with the pertinent information:

  • Name(s) to be included on the bookplate
  • Special wording for the bookplate if desired
  • Occasion, e.g., retirement, promotion, in memory, etc.
  • Suggested subject areas

and a check (made out to “UCF Foundation” with a note in the memo field “purchase of library material”) for the amount of the donation. The check will be deposited into the Library Enrichment account and the donor will receive a thank you note from the Director of Libraries acknowledging the donation.

Once the material is received, staff in the John C. Hitt Library will notify the donor, and contact the honoree, if appropriate, to offer the chance of first look before materials are processed into the collection.
